About this listen

Egypt 2153 BC: 80 priests set out under cover of darkness with a mysterious object....

Albania, 1986: A plane takes off bound for the Sudan. Somewhere over the Sahara it disappears....

The present: a mummified corpse is discovered in the dunes with a roll of camera film and a clay obelisk inscribed with a hieroglyphic sign....

Three unconnected events - or so it seems.

Satisfyingly long, well thought out and researched. The book held my interest until the very end.

Very good read!

This is a well written book based in modern Egypt (prior to recent political events) good descriptive writing though I felt that the plot became a little unbelievable towards the end - though maybe that is one of the attractions of stories linked to ancient egypt.

The Hidden Oasis- thoroughly enjoyed

If you are a fan of Paul Sussman's books based in Egypt, then you'll love this.

It is classic Sussman, but taken to another level. Without wanting to spoil anything, nobody is what they seem; CIA agents with hidden agenda, shady characters who are playing for the opposition and a pair of henchmen who are impossible to dislike, and whilst not quite coming good, having two hidden redeeming features. The ending is one of the most exciting cliffhangers, literally, I've "read" in a long time. Even Inspector Khalifa makes a cameo appearance.

Gordon Griffin is the narrator, and does his usual sterling job. It is rather strange, however, having just finished one of his, to find characters graced with the same voice as someone from a totally different book, but this is entertaining in itself.

The plot might disappoint anyone expecting pure factual Egypt, but come into the book with an open mind and a desire to be entertained, and I can guarantee that you'll enjoy it as much as I have.

Better & Better

This was a good story, Indiana Jones type story but had some good twists and turns in it, I don?t think it explained the mystery of the hidden Oasis, what was the artefact what was it use for, but it had a good end.

indiana Jones book

Well, i checked the reviews on Amazon before getting this and can only conclude they were written by his mum....
Tedious, irritating writing style and very thin on plot.
Pants.

Oh dear...

I thought this would be brilliant - having read the content and reviews of the book on-line. The end result was not great. I thought I was in for a fast paced thriller but it ended up as a vastly over long and pendulous ordeal. The characters are good and beliveable but the story just becomes more and more ludicrous the further in you go and it ended up like a montage of about 30 other books. I was glad when I (finally) got to the end. Shame.

Started well...

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who love stories of deceit, death and intrigue.

What could Paul Sussman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

shortened it, less death and a less complicated plot.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

When Romani and Molly were killed. I hate death but if there had to be death in this book, then seeing some of the bad guys in the book getting what they deserved was good.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

just that all the dodgy people were dispensed with.

Any additional comments?

This was another book I didn't enjoy and won't listen to again in a hurry.

A strange, unenjoyable book for me.

After reading previous reviews I thought this sounded like a good adventure set in Egypt. Although this was true, the reviews failed to mention the gory violence and descriptions of rape. Really spoiled what was a good story, so much so that I only managed to listen to less than a third before giving up. Shame because without those it was a good story and I really wanted to hear the rest of it. The stars given are mainly for the narrator who managed to convey the different accents and added realism to the story

A bit stomach turning
