About this listen

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

I didn't want to switch the story off as I wanted to know what will happen next. VERY GRIPPING!

loved it

I was drawn into this story from the start, every chapter left me wanting more. Although there were a couple of graphic scenes it wasn't gratuitous and I understood why it was there. I felt the horror the family felt and wanted to scream at the grandad to stop being a bully and wise up.
The narrator's voice was pleasant and complementary to the story.
A really great book. Can't recommend highly enough.

Bits of this were scary and well written. There were touching moments and the general storyline has some merit. But….. several holes in the plot, generally much longer than it needed to be and wtf was with the random graphically described sex scenes? They were so incongruous as to have me rolling my eyes and wishing whatever act being depicted would hurry up and be over so we could return to the story.
Missed a trick by not having a hearty twist in the ending too. Kinda meh all in all.

Patchy…… spoiler alert!

Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Well written and narrated. Sad but enthralling story. Actually had a nightmare after listening in bed one night.

Love the voice actor and the amazing story of the haunted. Readers get a great sense of the experience of the characters.

Never knew about this author until I found this .
Wow.
Prepared to be amazed and strap in for the full range of emotions. The boys setting up a detective agency, sibling tensions , man and wife relationships, .
The description of Miles broke my heart, the ending had me crying for ten minutes
Not your usual run of the mill haunted house book, absolutely fantastic

This runs the gauntlet of human emotions

If you like this kind of thing then I’d recommend James Herbert instead. It’s not bad but JH far superior.

James Herbert minus

Picked this just as a whim as wanted a book about a haunted house. It seemed to go in a few directions and hinted at something else not paranormal but then that didn’t come to fruition.

Has some quite graphic and frankly very random sexual scenes which didn’t really make sense and they were never explained. Again the book hinted at something but then never really went anywhere with it.

Few chapters that seemed to not quite fit into the story. I understand they were explaining a back story. But for me they weren’t needed and took me out of the storyline.

It’s not a story I would ever go back to. But I enjoyed it for what it was.

When the Perry family move to a new house, it seems like the perfect new start and a chance to have the life they always dreamt of. Fools! 🤣 everyone knows the trope, but this book really excels at providing that spooky build up that is needed. It's a fun read, that goes exactly where you expect it to, but loses nothing in the knowing.

a known trope well written
