About this listen

The 'if' of death is certain. The 'when' is unknown. It is the 'why' that really gets people's interest ...

From a rare and deadly amniotic avalanche to a victim of roasted peanuts ... The bestselling author of The Cause of Death and The Quick and the Dead returns with more stranger-than-fiction stories of death, disease and murder—as well as new perspectives on high-profile cases, including the disappearance of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope, the trial of Mark Lundy, and the ill-fated journey of Ansett Flight 703.

I adore all of these books but particularly enjoyed the current topics in this most recent one. Excellent as ever - will there be another?!

High expectations were surpassed

The narrator was fine to listen to despite the New Zealand accents/impressions, but as a warning to anyone with misophonia - they haven’t edited out a single saliva swallow noise. You hear it all.

Misophonia warning

Good story, well read, jumps around somewhat which can become confusing but this is ultimately a list of interesting stories so it’s not difficult to tune in ad hoc. The author reading their story sounds consistently hungry throughout, audible belly rumbles which I enjoyed.

Fun for a morbid mind

Another fascinating, thoughtful and very enjoyable insight into the world of pathology. With a wonderfully easy to listen to narration.

Very enjoyable

First of all may I commend the narrator? Perfectly pitched and a pleasure to listen to - not too flamboyant but never dull, I could listen to this gentleman talk all day.
This was a great collection of slightly unusual stories from a pathologist and gives a good insight into the kind of work he does including some stories from others he has worked with. Sometimes sad, sometimes amusing but never self indulgent like some books of this ilk can be...a fine line to tread!
The literary quotes at the conclusion of each chapter is a nice touch too.
I can see two earlier books by the same author (different narrator though) so I'll give those a try too as I really did enjoy this one and it was informative as well as entertaining.

Greatly enjoyed from start to finish

Fascinating insight into the pathologist’s role in determining the cause of death and explaining how critical it is for hypotheses to be able to replicated in order to be proof of undeniable scientific fact. The last chapter explaining the ‘21 grams’ theory which was previously unknown to me was absolutely fascinating. More of the same please!

Truly Gripping and Insightful

Was a wonderful audible to listen to either in the car or whilst pottering on around the house, the author understands and appreciates what it takes to captivate the reader/listener and is able to convey a clear story that the listener can imagine in their head.

How captivating the listen was.

Really enjoyed listening to the tales from this entertaining pathologist , well read by the narrator .

Fascinating and interesting

Having very much enjoyed the precise, professional tone of Scottish forensic pathologist Professor Sue Black, I was immediately surprised by this author's willingness to theorise on all sorts of subjects well outside his sphere of expertise. In fact he seems to spend more of the book armchair theorising on psychology, psychiatry and wide ranging aspects of the criminal justice system than he does on actual pathology. These are subjects which in one breath he admits he has no specialist knowledge of, and in the next breath is disagreeing with experts based on his hunch that (for example) no one would *ever* commit suicide with their dog in the car.

The other issue with this book is the style of narration. The narrator's voice is clear and pleasant but I just find it way too hammy. He reads every line like it's Hamlet and every death is pronounced like the biggest tragedy in the world. Yeah, death is sad but come on we are listening to a book about pathology! It would be a short book if there were no deaths, and I don't believe the pathologists are personally mourning every single autopsy in the mortuary to this extent.

Overall this book has some interesting stories and if you aren't familiar with the genre it is pacy and light. But I found it frankly a bit embarrassing listening to someone who has fallen into the trap of thinking that because they are an expert in one specialist field, they can offer meaningful opinions about any other subject they choose.

Wanders far out of his lane.

Initially I stopped listening a couple of times but persevered and was pleased I did. Some super interesting cases covered and will know seek out his other books

Improved as it progressed
