About this listen

The Ex Hex is a spellbinding rom-com with a twist, think Practical Magic in Gilmore Girls' Stars Hollow.

New York Times best-selling author Rachel Hawkins, writing as Erin Sterling, casts a spell with a spine-tingling romance full of wishes, witches and hexes gone wrong.

You broke my heart, Rhys Penhallow. And we curse you. You and your whole stupid, hot line.

Vivienne Jones handled the biggest break-up of her life the way that any witch would: vodka, bubble baths and a curse on her ex.

That was nine years ago. Now Rhys Penhallow, descendant of the town's founders, breaker of hearts and still irritatingly gorgeous, is back. Rhys has returned to the quaint town of Graves Glen to recharge the ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival. But when his every move results in calamity, Vivi realises that hexing her ex might not have been so harmless after all....

As the curse starts to affect the magic of the town, resulting in murderous wind-up toys, an outraged ghost and a surprisingly talkative cat, Vivi and Rhys must put their personal feelings aside and work together to break the curse and save not just the town, but also Rhys' life.

‘Performer’ ruins it

I had seen really good reviews for this book, so I thought I would find its audiobook version. This kind of fiction is normally right up my street but the performer/narrator reads each word with such weird emphasis that I have to concentrate so much on figuring out what she’s saying that I have barely heard the story itself.

it was alright (contains spoilers)

it's a fine listen. not super engaging or anything but it keeps your attention. Just a typical romance novel with some magic thrown in.

I did find a lack of resolution with Simon Penhallow and the discovery of how the town was founded annoying. He obviously knew but was happy to keep quiet?

I found the narrator to be a bit off putting sometimes..
not going to lie there were points where I thought she was Jennifer Coolidge.

Cute, cosy and sexy spooky season romance

I did think it was a bit rushed at the end and the romance seems to be based on sexual chemistry, but it’s lots of fun.

I listened to the audiobook and while Rhys is Welsh, the narrator didn’t even attempt a Welsh accent. He was mostly American, with an occasional plummy English twinge. Very odd choice and very much not the same as a Welsh accent.

Great story!

I enjoyed the story, I didn’t enjoy the attempts at an accent but it was still enjoyable.
I find it a lot easier to listen to the audiobook while I read and this helped me read the book in no time at all!

Not my cup of tea.

It's a light-hearted romantic cliché ridden romance novel. Really great if you're into that kind of thing, however I had believed it would be a deeper so wasn't that keen.

spoilers ahead, but I liked it!

Can I just question something real quick please?
Who, why, what, how, when - in regards to the extreme horniness of these people.

Other than that I really liked this. Easy and fast read and I wasn't really bored anywhere through it.

Not sure what else to say, I get why some won't like it, I get why some would love it. Then there's also the meh-people, it's not at all bad, but I could do without the incessant cock-talk and extreme horniness, the book isn't set up to be a smut but in parts of it it definitely goes there. Not what I was looking for.

Just a Fool in Love

Vivienne young witch, falls madly in love with Rhys, in her youth - he's one of the town's "founding sons". But when he returns home to Wales after their summer together breaking her heart, she and her sisters accidentally curse him.
Nine years later, they are reunited in the midst of magic gone awry in the town of Graves Glenn and the two have to join forces to save the town.
it's funny, sweet, sexy and has a great set of worldbuilding around it.

Narrator sounds like Siri

I like the story, but the narrator sounds robotic and bored. Such a shame.

spoiled by narration

The story was quite a fun lighthearted one and perfect for spooky autumn time but it was completely ruined by the dreadful stilted narration, it sounded like a computer reading text which was awful. I slowed the playback speed which helped a little but the only reason I finished it was that I downloaded it for driving up north for work and had nothing else to listen to!
