About this listen

A masterclass in espionage thriller fiction from the heir to John le Carre for fans of Mick Herron, Charles Cumming and David McCloskey. Meet disgraced MI5 agent Slim Parsons, a character who - like Lisbeth Salander - will sear your soul

Slim Parsons is all but burned.

Her last deep cover job for MI5 ended with a life-and-death struggle on a private jet that caused her to go on the run from both the deadly target and her angry bosses in the Security Service. They say that violence comes too easily to her; that she's bordering on delinquent and unsuitable for the role of an MI5 operative.

Yet she is recalled and asked to infiltrate a news website that's causing alarm in the highest circles. It is staffed by a group descended from wartime codebreakers operating from an unassuming office block near Bletchley Park. Operation Linesman looks like a come down, the curtain on a brilliant career in the shadows. However, she accepts the assignment on condition that the Security Service searches for her missing brother.

Linesman turns out to be anything but simple. Her personal loss, her previous deep cover role, and a threat to MI5 itself from her original target come together in a three-way collision.

And all the while she is watched by someone even deeper in the shadows than she is.

I’ve had to give up on this because of the narration. There are enough good reviews of the book itself so I’d love to finish it but cannot bear this reading of it.

Terrible narration, avoid!

The story was ok, if nothing special but I had to play it at 1.35 speed as the voices used for the characters were so appalling which was strange as when reading the rest of the narrative it was passable if a little slow

Poor narration

Worst narration of any audible book I have listened to. The wrong voice for the novel and truly excruciating attempts at accents. It was an effort to listen to the end

Writing not as good as earlier works by Porter

The characters and story line are just right in this book. The performance was great at 1.2 speed and Imogen Church is brilliant at delivering the mood and characters. A very good listen

A really enjoyable book and listen - at 1.2 speed

None of the accents rang true and the reading ruined the story for me . I will make sure I do not order another book read by this actress

Poor reading

Amazing story but the narration was really disappointing. Forged on despite it and it was worth it. But such a shame.

Terrific story

Good story but the narration was meh. The voice for “Bridie” was like nails on a blackboard.

Not great narration.

Great plotting. This is the first Henry Porter book I've read and I'll definitely be reading anything he's written.

excellent

I like Henry Porter as a writer. This story was okay - perhaps a little self-indulgent, with far too many coincidences of Slim's family. But the narration spoiled it....Imogen Church huffed and puffed - literally - through some of the male characters. It's not necessary to sound like that just because it's a male talking. It sounded like a five-year old trying to ape a grown-up.

Meh

Awful narration so impossible to continue so I do not know if the plot was any good
