I don't like the narrator, Jonathan keeble is far better, his voice characters are easy to recognise and follow, unlike Russell Boulter's attempt.

I read this book when it was originally published and I wasn’t wowed then. I thought it would improve with time and audible narration: it did to some extent but the story for me was a bit too far fetched. It also seemed to have much more description than dialogue and less Roman “flavour”. As for the narration, it seemed as if even the narrator was bored with all that description and struggled to get into character; Macro has never sounded so lame!

There are a number of authors writing in this genre but I always find Simon Scarrow's story telling superior to the rest. As a Roman military novel this one works well and its offers some interesting insights into the politics of the region combined with enough action to keep you happy. Where it is slightly less satisfactory is in its somewhat mystical storyline about early Christians which gets tedious at times. Overall though worth a listen.

again a good story line with well developed characters only minus was the introduction of a different narrator who changed the principal characters dialects from the previous stories

Macro and Cato are in action again and the result is another cracking outing with an excellent narration that really brings the story to life

I still can’t get on board with this narrators voice for Macro - I miss the narrator from the first couple of books! - however he does speak well and clearly, accents aside. Story was entertaining enough and teases at various mysteries from the origins of Christianity, without making any judgements or pushing the religion.

Another enjoyable Cato and Macro adventure. Narration still could be improved upon. Russel Boulter has a good clear speaking voice which is expressive and well-paced. However his poor pronunciation of character and place names is irritating and lapse into Scouse when characterising Macro doesn’t fit well either and sounds ridiculous.
