About this listen
In 1951 John Wyndham published his novel The Day of the Triffids to moderate acclaim. Fifty-two years later, this horrifying story is a science-fiction classic, touted by The Times (London) as having 'all the reality of a vividly realised nightmare'.
Bill Masen, bandages over his wounded eyes, misses the most spectacular meteorite shower England has ever seen. Removing his bandages the next morning, he finds masses of sightless people wandering the city. He soon meets Josella, another lucky person who has retained her sight, and together they leave the city, aware that the safe, familiar world they knew a mere 24 hours before is gone forever.
But to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, one must survive the Triffids, strange plants that years before began appearing all over the world. The Triffids can grow to over seven feet tall, pull their roots from the ground to walk and kill a man with one quick lash of their poisonous stingers. With society in shambles, they are now poised to prey on humankind. Wyndham chillingly anticipates bio-warfare and mass destruction, 50 years before their realisation, in this prescient account of Cold War paranoia.
About the author: John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Benyon Harris was born in 1903, the son of a barrister. He tried a number of careers including farming, law, commercial art and advertising, and started writing short stories, intended for sale, in 1925. From 1930 to 1939 he wrote stories of various kinds under different names, almost exclusively for American publications, while also writing detective novels. During the war he was in the Civil Service and then the Army. In 1946 he went back to writing stories for publication in the USA and decided to try a modified form of science fiction, a form he called 'logical fantasy'.

Great story
Like some other reviewers, I read this in my youth and found it conceptually gripping then; it hasn't lost that in the intervening years.
It is a shame that the narrator seemed to be coming across a lot of the book for the first time and I found myself correcting the delivery in my head and sometimes out loud.
To be fair though, for a free edition, you can't really complain and it didn't wreck the narrative.
The tender exchanges between Bill and Josella are unconvincing but that is more down to John Wyndham and the era of publication than to Kingsley Ben-Adir

Great story terrible performance.
This is one of the all time great sci-fi stories. it's a real shame that the performance is so bad. I hope they re-record it one day.

Classic tale with horrific narration (not in a good way)
The classic horticultural horror is read so slovenly that I can only assume the reader hates science fiction or plants (maybe both). Had to give up with over 6 hours remaining because I kept interrupting with corrections to emphases (to make it make sense) and pronunciation. There’s no attempt at characterisations or dramatisation and the overall tone after the first few chapters has a “fed up stroppy teenager made to read aloud for a punishment” feel about it. Very odd and, as it’s one of my favourite Wyndham stories, a shame.

Brilliant.
One of the best books ever written. Beautifully written during a more innocent age. I love this book.

Classic Book and Excellent Narration
This is an absolutely classic book and if you have not read it, ignore the films and listen to this. Really nice Sci-Fi . No crashy fighting just intelligent narrative on a classic end of the world theme. It would be so much worse if it happened today.😭🙈

couldn't put it down
even tho I thought thr book should be re-named 'look here ' and the plot was surely ridiculous, I listened to smoke it and chuckled when I realised its silliness. but soon after I forgot how silly it was and became addicted! I literally coukd not out it down! Didn't enjoy narraties voice is was nasal and robot like tho occasionally morphed I ti michael Caine which was a vast improvement but then he would once more exclaim 'now look here!- lol recommended? yes!

As good as I remember
Read this whilst a young 1st year at Grammar school, and voraciously read every Wyndham book I could get from the library. I have returned every decade or so to reread , rewatched the original film and later TV series and the story although set in its time it still has the power to enthral.
This audible version is just as good, the post apocalyptic world and the struggles to survive still hit home and I’m sure I will re listen again soon.
Now on to the next in the audible canon the Kraken awaits….

Classic Wyndham
Great story from the golden age of sci-fi some terms now dated but the story and ideas as strong as ever. Narration is fine, price was right if you've not read it before or even in a while treat yourself again.
