About this listen

A brave young gentlewoman dares to defy an infuriatingly arrogant earl. Brave and beautiful Miss Emily Wingrave knows that it will not be easy to help her older widowed sister deal with the trustee of her late husband’s estate.

The trustee is none other than the willful, arrogant Earl of Meriden, and she is determined to stop him from meddling with her sister’s struggling family. But as Emily engages the provocative Earl in a battle of wits and wills, she learns just how well armed he is: His surprising charm and seductive techniques will make her worry that she might very well be the one who surrenders.

Funny and romantic

Great story, funny banter between the two main characters, and an enjoyable plot. Very like Heyer, which is a good thing. Well read, despite a few mispronunciations and a few dodgy Yorkshire accents. Mary Jane Wells gets the wit and the flow with her narration, not at all stilted like so many readers of audiobooks. And her male characters sound normal - female narrators sometimes make male characters sound pompous and old, definitely not what you want in a romantic lead. Really enjoyed this.

Terrible book, wonderful narration.

Any additional comments?

When you read terrible reviews on Goodreads, but forget to remove the book from your Audible wishlist...

I am a huge fan of Mary Jane Wells, but even she could not save this nonsense. The two main characters are just awful, unnecessarily argumentative and childish. I'm not sure what exactly the point of this book is. Avoid!
