About this listen

Will Jessica Sutton-Drew win the argument, or will she win his heart?

Strong-willed and intelligent, Miss Jessica Sutton-Drew enjoys championing worthy causes such as women's independence, much like her formidable aunt, Susan Peele, London's most daunting bluestocking, and regardless of other relatives' protests against such unladylike behavior. But Miss Sutton-Drew may have met her match in Sir Brian Gregory, a shockingly wealthy mine owner and local magistrate, who is also handsome, brilliant, and charming. Convinced that Sir Brian is guilty of any number of social injustices, Jessica resists his enticing flattery and flirtation. But can she cease her battling ways long enough to listen to her heart? Or will oncoming scandal ruin everything before she recognizes the truth?

The story was brilliant
The narrator ruined it with her staccato delivery
Really brave and noble of Amanda Scott to tackle the issue of slavery

Lovely story, horrible reading

Another excellent listen! This author always delivers an enjoyable listen. Very Georgette Heyer, an original story with twists and turns, will certainly listen to more from this author.

Another excellent listen

I enjoy Amanda Scott's writing style but her female characters are forever having 'comfortable cozes'. The hero, although masterful, was not as arrogant and bullying as some of the heroes in her other books.

A bit slow

I'm so happy I found Amanda Scott! I wish they'd make her books into a Netflix series. Look how popular Bridgeton is and their storylines are awful!

loved it!

I expected this to be about a protagonist who was quite cerebral in her approach to life, because she’s well read and therefore would have reasoning and logical thinking skills.

Instead, I find that she is ‘merely’ strong minded and opinionated! So the story isn’t driven along, but rather, it’s dragged: complaining and whining and jumping to conclusions, rather than discussing and debating matters!

And, to top it all off, she gets ‘Missish’ towards the end of the narrative! Certainly not a favourite of mine by Ms Scott.

Not quite what I expected

Well narrated and interesting but far too long for what it was. Could have omitted half the characters and at least 1 sub-plots

Could do with a good edit

I really enjoyed this Audible story. It’s very reminiscent of Georgette Heyer. Polly Lee’s reading is excellent although I was deeply irritated by her pronounciation of “Liskeard”which should I believe be pronounced ‘Liskard’.

Very enjoyable

I have always enjoyed Amanda Scott books and this one was as usually well written. Trigger Warning however to Black readers as there are POV for land owners economic justification for slavery which you might find traumatizing. Read with emotional intelligence.

Good read

You know how The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist isn't a novel but an explanation of the inevitable failings of capitalism? This feels like an argument in favour of compensating slave owners thinly disguised as a novel. Frankly bizarre.

Weirdly political
