About this listen

It is the year of our Lord 1363. And in the cathedral city of York, people are dying in mysterious circumstances. But there seems to be a common thread - the herbal remedies dispensed by Nicholas Wilton, Master Apothecary. The first victim is an anonymous pilgrim. But when a highborn nobleman dies after taking the same potion the authorities decide to act.

Dispatched to York, in disguise, to unravel the mystery, Owen Archer, former Captain of Archers, apprentices himself to the Apothecary. But it is from Wilton’s beautiful wife Lucie that he must learn the arcane secrets of the trade. Slowly but surely, Owen begins to uncover the truth. And when the deaths continue, he realises to his horror he must count Lucie among the suspects.

Read all the "Owen Archer series" and wished there were more, so was pleased to see them in audio, can travel back in time while ironing. Good info on the period and a gripping story line, "2 buts" the storys are better read in order as they follow on in time & tale, but some are missing, Stephen Thorne does a very good welsh Owen then the narrator changes and is not as good, hope the rest appear and are read by Stephen Thorne.

I bought and listened to this series some time ago and have 'discovered' it afresh. I don't remember having enjoyed it as much the first time around but it has certainly got me hooked. I'm now well into the series but it was this being the first book re-awakened my interest. The performances by Stephen Thorne are absolutely spot-on and draw you into each tale. I'm not a great connoisseur of murder mysteries but I'm certainly enjoying these books (again).

Listening to this series for the second time.

Enjoyed the book but unsure of historical accuracy sometimes e.g. Old Bailey which I thought was Tudor rather than Plantagenat

Enjoyed

It's a while since I read the Owen Archer mysteries; I enjoyed them then, and wasn't disappointed now. If you like medieval intrigue, you will enjoy the twists, turns & mystery in these novels, especially with the great narration.

Very enjoyable

Columbo style 'mystery'. Unconvincing and problematic villain. it felt like it was slowly filling in the details rather than revealing the plot.

long winded and predictable

I took my time with this one, the characters aren't the type to rush. It's a mellow blend of history and crime, with characters that you grow to love, never quite sure of all of their motives until the end.
Well worth the time to really enjoy.

beautifully crafted tale

Excellent! After struggling to find more historical mysteries and finishing two series from Susannah Gregory I was spoiled. Either the stories I found weren't right or the narrator or both! So thank you Candace Robb and Stephen Thorne! Perfect!

I enjoyed this!

I know this series is very popular but I think it overwritten - the kind of unnecessary background and description I would skip if I was reading the book

Good but overwritten
