About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Algebra of Happiness, written and read by Scott Galloway.

From the New York Times bestselling author, a provocative book of hard-won wisdom for achieving a fulfilling career and life.

- How can you have a meaningful career, not just a lucrative one?
- Is a work/life balance really possible?
- What does it take to make a long-term relationship succeed?
- What can you do now so there are no regrets aged 40, 50 or 80?

As Scott Galloway puts it, by the time you hit your mid twenties sh*t gets real. Life become stressful. Even the smart, the hard working and the elite can feel lost in a chaotic, noisy and unpredictable world. As a professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, the debate in Galloway's MBA class often veers away from business strategy to the challenging issue of life strategies. Which is why Galloway, in his signature, take-no-prisoners style, has developed a dynamic formula for a life well lived.

In The Algebra of Happiness Galloway tells you how life can be navigated and negotiated better to maximise happiness and minimise the inevitable stress. Delivering practical advice and hard-won wisdom on everything from when to own property to how hard to work, this is self-help for anyone struggling with life's big questions. Through simple equations that measure the relationship between success, resilience and failure or the correlation between happiness and money, Galloway attempts to convert intangible advice to tangible equations.

Shocked by one huge contradiction in Scottj's thinking. He paints the harrowing scene where his Mum is struck by cancer and her treatment options are few because she/he wasn't loaded at the time or had no Doctor friends. Then at other points refers to the luck of being born in the best postcode in the world the USA. The USA seems like a great place to become a billionaire but in the best postcodes in the world secretaries can receive the same health care as billionaires.

USA is a strange set up

Scott Galloway is honest, sincere and searingly self deprecating. In this book he shares his life advice and what in his view is the real definition of success. Spoiler - it’s not money or status. If you read one book this year, make it this one.

The most important book you’ll ever read

I absolutely loved this book, which I bought after seeing Professor Galloway speak at a work event. Prof G lays an out an honest view on life, happiness and success through a series of thoughtful equations. Filled with personal, candid and often tear jerking stories, this book makes you consider what in your own life really matters, and will hopefully make you a better human for perusing the ultimate goods: kindness, humility, caring for others and good manners. As a mother of a young child with a full time and full on city job i needed to read this - I will now be encouraging (forcing) my husband to do the same. Thanks for your wise words Scott.

I discovered Professor Scott Galloway via his Podcast (Pivot) and think he's brilliant - insightful, witty and wise. His first book, 'The Four', about Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook is incredible. A revelation of the real business and business practices of big tech that is sure to make the scales fall from your eyes. However, I was a bit suspicious of this book. The title really irked me. Silicon Valley already seems obsessed with both algorithms and tantric self-gratification and I feared that this book was some new coda for that. I dunno maybe the title is meant to be ironic. Anyway, what you get is a short (and easily digestible) book of universal life-lessons and the personal experiences that brought such wisdom. It's a book of lessons from the old to the young. I'm not particularly young or inexperienced, but I took heart and learnings from it nonetheless. The only thing is Galloway is 54. I hope he's not dying, cos I think he's great.

A little book of wisdom

Galloway is very clear that this is his guide to happiness without qualifications, but that doesn't stop it from being informative, analytical, interesting and above all helpful. great that Galloway narrates too.
