About this listen

In her brand-new series Thrown Away Children, Louise Allen shares the harrowing stories she is exposed to as a foster mother. The first in the series, Stella's Story, tells the astonishing true story of a young girl scarred by an abusive past.

Named after the lager that christened her at birth, Stella's life is characterised instability and neglect. Her teenage mother abandons her in the first few weeks of her life, and left in the 'care' of her father, she ends up lying deserted in a house with no food, no water, no clothes and no warmth.

She eventually lands in the care of foster carer Louise, who is determined to change her life for the better. Things seem to be going well - but when Stella has a startling response to having her photo taken, it becomes clear the scars of her abuse run deeper than anyone could have ever guessed.

Having worked as a professional educator until my retirement I have encountered many children travelling through the care system. I couldn’t change lives but I could help those children believe in themselves.
The heartbreak of this book reaches far beyond the child Stella’s story indicating how, in this world, our children’s futures are determined my funding, budgets and often people who see them as cases not individuals.
Thank you to the author, foster families and those who work to bring better lives to children and young people.
I highly recommend reading this book.

I really like the story, and the background before she came into care. but found the book a bit confusing at times, it felt a little slow in the beginning, and rushed in the end

Overall a good read

A story that many of us don’t think about even though we know it happens . From tragedy to a heart warming resolve.

A heart warming story

Louise told her story beautifully. I was gripped from beginning to end. Hard to say I enjoyed this tragic account, it’s not the right word, but I found it terribly sad and am grateful there are families like Louise & Lloyds to help pick up the pieces in these children’s troubled lives.

How tragic these children’s lives can be ……
