As with the previous books a number of new and ongoing stories are skillfully blended. Complete in its own right it also sets up part 4 wonderfully.

Toby Longworth is a wonderful narrator who skilfully brings a range of accents to the story. Well worth listening to anything he narrates.

Hull and its environs are brought to life by a writer who knows and loves the area.

Recommended for lovers of detective stories with a wider edge.

A slow starter but hang in there when it gathers momentum you cannot stop listening. Well worth it.

Another good book

Before you buy this book I think it's useful for you to know: this is effectively part one.
It's ok to end a book with a cliffhanger and the beginning of the next story but that isn't what happens here.
There are two major story lines and neither of them are anywhere near resolved.
On top of that almost nothing happens in the first half of this book.
There is an awful lot of everyday descriptive detail in the style of people making cups of coffee and people brushing their teeth that I found very boring so I nearly gave up on it.
When you do get into the two stories, they aren't really up to the standard of the first two books.
One of the story lines can be summed up by the word 'thuggery'. There are no intricate plot twists here or clever clues, it's just brutish violence.
The other story line takes us into the minds of the victims as they are brutally murdered.
This kind of first-person experience takes us beyond entertainment and I fail to see how anyone can enjoy it.
It's too brutal, too real.
Once it gets going you get into the McAvoy character and you start to enjoy it but it is a very dissatisfying book for the reasons I've given.
If you enjoy the sort of soap opera every day detail and getting into the lives of the characters, then this book may well be for you especially if you are happy with really painful, brutal violence.
But if what you want is twists, subtle clues and a complex plot then you will be disappointed especially as absolutely nothing is resolved at the end. There's no intellectual challenge in this book whatsoever.
You aren't going to have the pleasure of seeing the clues revealed and seeing how it all fits together and to see if you were right. And the thuggery and brutal violence are beyond understanding.

I have been enjoying this series, although they are quite gruesome. However a factual mistake (that would have been so easily checked) made me doubt whether I want to listen to more if the autohor is not capable of getting this single (but important to the plot) fact correct.
Psychiatrists ARE doctors. You have to complete medical training to become a Psychiatrist which you then study as a post graduate like any other medical speciality. It is not something you can give up medicine to go and study because it is easier as the plot tells. Perhaps he meant Psychology for which you do not require a Medical degree.
Perhaps not important to some but makes me doubt the integrity of the author’s research!
