About this listen
For 11 years Oakley Farrell has been silent. At the age of five, she stopped talking, and no one seems to know why. Refusing to communicate beyond a few physical actions, Oakley remains in her own little world.
Bullied at school, she has just one friend, Cole Benson. Cole stands by her, refusing to believe that she is not perfect the way she is. Over the years they have developed their own version of a normal friendship. However, will it still work as they start to grow even closer?
When Oakley is forced to face someone from her past, can she hold her secret in any longer?
UK native Natasha Preston grew up in small villages and towns. She discovered her love of writing when she stumbled across an amateur writing site and uploaded her first story and hasn't looked back since. She enjoys writing NA romance, thrillers, gritty YA and the occasional serial killer.

However, this is certainly YA fiction - when you give Oakley's mutism any thought at all, its onset, the circumstances, her schooling... there's just no way that she would have been left for 11 years without speech therapy, emotional support, psychological therapy or taught to sign. This type of plot hole is pretty gaping and was distracting. I'm not suggesting she'd be speaking, just that it wouldn't be blindly accepted by everyone in her life that she 'just didn't speak'... I found myself thinking a lot about how unlikely that situation was, instead of paying attention to the plot.
We also need to talk about the narration. Oakley was great, believable as a vulnerable teen, and Anne-Marie did a fairly good job of voicing the majority of the other people in Oakley's chapters. Kris... he was just sickly sweet! And both of them completely butchered Jasper! I couldn't tell whether he was supposed to be a middle-aged woman, a ten-year-old boy, or an elderly man! He was voiced in such a peculiar way, and his expression and indignation felt all wrong!
Nevertheless, I'll be following up the rest of this series, I need to know what happens to Oakley, where things are headed etc.
I'll listen again, but it should be a YA
