About this listen

Taking Richard Sharpe to St Helena and Chile, this is an adventure story in the classic tradition. Read by the star of TV’s Sharpe series, Sean Bean.

Five years after the Battle of Waterloo, Sharpe’s peaceful retirement in Normandy is shattered. An old friend, Don Blas Vivar, is missing in Chile, reported dead at rebel hands – a report his wife refuses to believe. She appeals to Sharpe to find out the truth.

So it is that reluctant Sharpe, along with Patrick Harper, find themselves bound for Chile via St. Helena, where they have a fateful meeting with the fallen Emperor Napoleon. Convinced that they are on their way to collect a corpse, neither man can imagine that dangers that await them in Chile…

Soldier, hero, rogue – Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles whose green jacket he proudly wears.

‘The best battle scenes of any writer I’ve ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive.’ George R.R. Martin

First, I didn't realise this was the abridged version which made the whole plot somewhat jarring unfortunately. However this has the rare benefit of being narrated by Sharpe himself! This is the biggest draw for me, having read & watched almost all of his adventures. I was surprised how well he did, some accent a bit wobbly but small price to pay in my opinion.

So my lower score on the story is down to how they have abridged this so will strongly highlight this to anyone considering purchasing. it's a 3 hour version of a 11.5hr full version so you can only imagine how much is lost! I must say, it shows. I felt it was very abrupt in several places, even the ending was a cliff edge so a terrible way to wrap things up. As such the story was fine, but you really notice how much you can assume is going to happen far more with it being so brief.

In summary; the novelty factor here for sure is Sean Bean... but comes at the high cost of a rather short & underwhelming adventure. Could be more suitable for those who already know the full story and wondered how it would sound read by Sean Bean :)

Short and Sharpe (boom boom)

There's only one Sean Bean and there's only one Sharpe. Nobody else can voice him in the same way. Accept no substitutes.

Rip roaring adventure

Unfortunately Sean bean does this story no justice considering he was Richard Sharpe. Very boring reader

Great story
