About this listen

Winner of the Theakston's Crime Award 2014

The dead can't speak to us,” Professor Madoc had said. But that was a lie. Sometimes, only an outsider can get to the truth. Patrick had been on the outside all his life. Thoughtful, but different, infuriating even to his own mother, his life changes when he follows an obsession with death to study anatomy at university. When he uncovers a crime that everybody else was too close to see, he proves finally that he has been right all along: Nothing is exactly as it seems. And there have been many more lies closer to home....

Surprisingly enjoyable, very well read

I didn't think much of it to begin with but it expanded it a captivating story. Very nicely read, a range of different and suitable voices that captured the characters well. Top job!

Very enjoyable thriller.

Odd premise. You have to run with it a bit in terms of probability but its quite rewarding. Recommended.

Original and entertaining

What did you like most about Rubbernecker?

I would thoroughly recommend this refreshing read. The author captures the main character with an ASC in an entertaining but non patronising way. The story is well developed. I would definitely want to hear more from this author. I particularly liked the way the character played on his condition a little.

Excellent read/listen

Great book. Totally unexpected and original story line, excellent writing, completely believable characters and extremely well narrated. All voices convincing and natural. Am tempted to listen to the whole thing again now!

so good!

Round about chapter 54 or 55 I thought we'd reached the end and wished it had lasted longer. To my delight there was a whole new section of crossing t's and dotting i's.
As usual from this author an excellent read with engaging characters, fascinating situations and, in this case, a chase scene that would make an exciting good film. in fact the whole story would, too.
Excellent narration, no silly voices and, thank goodness, the protagonist not over-played.

Good storyline

Well read by the narrator, great story with twists and turns.. great descriptions of the main character Jacks reaction to things ( he has Asperger’s).. only thing I wasn’t so keen on was the anatomical dissection detail.. was a wee bit much for me…

Shades of "Dog in the night-time"

Would you listen to Rubbernecker again? Why?

Probably not but then that's because there are too many other books I haven't even heard once....also it's partly a mystery and I know the solution now.

What other book might you compare Rubbernecker to, and why?

The mystery of the dog in the night-time.........because of the point of view of the Asperger's hero/detective. In this case it is a young adult.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Not any single scene ...but the workings of Patrick's logical mind were always good as were the thoughts of the male hospital patient.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not quite but I felt a strong sympathy with the Patrick's parents.

Any additional comments?

Very well Narrated. I will consider purchasing other books by this author, and other books not necessarily by this author with this narrator.

Funny & interesting, avoid if squeamish

Reviews mention this is near the knuckle as it concerns donation & dissection - be aware.
It’s also a believable portrayal of someone with Asperger syndrome, although obviously not a typical example of every day life. I enjoyed the humour, the Welshness, the narrator & the story.
