About this listen

Latin was a dead language—until the aliens arrived.

Out-of-work Latin teacher and borderline alcoholic Austin DeSantis is determined to spend his final days in the arms of a prostitute—that is if the aliens don’t exterminate humanity first.

But when the aliens land at the Vatican, begin speaking Latin, and reveal themselves to be Catholic, the world turns upside down.

Pressed into service as a translator and thrust into the center of humanity's first contact with a cryptic alien race, Austin must uncover their true intentions before religious turmoil rips the planet apart. But with Austin caught between the Catholic Church, the US military, and an enigmatic alien AI, he'll have to decide where his loyalties lie as the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.

PILGRIMS is a sci-fi retelling of Augustine's Confessions, mixing a high-concept premise à la Children of Time with the ceaseless pacing and rich characterization of Red Rising.

Aliens come to earth - pretty normal sci-fi story, except with a twist - these aliens align with the Catholic faith.

The concept was fascinating, the pacing of the story good, but I felt the main character was just too naive to be believable, with some situations feeling forced or contrived. The action by the various governments too felt 'off', and didn't contribute to the story and made it feel clunky in places.

Jeff's narration was impeccable (I have chosen this book as he narrates other series I thoroughly enjoy).

One other criticism is to please think of your listeners - I have hearing loss, so the interspersed 'radio' dialogue was impossible to understand or hear. Same with other sound effects competing with spoken words. If your going to have sound effects, then pause narration.

The ending credits hint at further story development - so this is now on my watch list.

Fantastic.. but To be continued..?

First off i should address the praying elephant in the room: this has a pretty heavy religion theme going on, despite this though if you are open minded you will follow along with no prior knowledge needed as everything you need to know is explained. I will advise that for some it may be a little bit to accept this books story especially if you are not of a christian adjacent religion.

Now im past the only tiny issue i can report that this was a great little scifi novel exploring some pretty heavy and thought provoking ideas. I cant claim i liked everything but i did like alot and hope this marks a triumphant return to scifi from soundbooth's narrator's.

Overall a fun scifi with a interesting twist!

I’m an atheist, but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment in the slightest. The Story was gripping from the beginning to the end. I listened to everything in two days - the time really flew by.

The mix of science fiction combined with likeable characters and an overall thrilling plot, makes for an exceptional experience. The last time I felt similarly was after listening to project Hail Mary.

But what really seals the deal is the fantastic narration from SBT. Jeff and the whole cast went above and beyond to deliver an immersive audio experience that turns even bland scenes into an enjoyable listen.

I can’t wait for the second book :)

Off to a great start!
