About this listen

Bestselling author Terry Goodkind's epic Sword of Truth series continues with the next stunning installment, Phantom.

On the day she awoke remembering nothing but her name, Kahlan Amnell became the most dangerous woman alive. For everyone else, that was the day that the world began to end.

As her husband, Richard, desperately searches for his beloved, whom only he remembers, he knows that if she doesn't soon discover who she really is, she will unwittingly become the instrument that will unleash annihilation. But Kahlan learns that if she ever were to unlock the truth of her lost identity, then evil itself would finally possess her, body and soul.

If she is to survive in a murky world of deception and betrayal, where life is not only cheap but fleeting, Kahlan must find out why she is such a central figure in the war-torn world swirling around her. What she uncovers are secrets darker than she could ever have imagined.

The story is dragging too long

It is a nice story and very captivating at places but at others i just bad to skip as it was too repetitive about things we know from the previous books.

Change of narrator

At the beginning I was really disappointed the narrator had changed for this book and it took about 12/13 episodes to get into it. It is still a great story and I look forward to the next one, but I do wish it could be read by the same narrator for the whole series.

Best book that I had so far

As the main history comes to the end the characters get more interesting and more engaging in their battle.

Great book but slow in places.

This book is yet another great instalment in this epic series and although slow at times the twists and turns are just as frustrating and exciting.

Great listen

If you've read or listened to the starting books you'll know you want to read some more, personally I found the reading better than the listening, but these are still a great listen if you don't have the hours and hours to spend reading the books

Another Goodkind marvel

This is book 10 in an 11 book series. I LOVED IT!! Such a rich world is created by Goodkind. At the end of the book I was so excited that I went straight on to the last one. This can be read alone but much more is gained if you read it as part of the series. The characters are so well conceived and the plot so well put together. The narrator is one of the better narrators of the series although to begin with he is a little robotic but once you get into the book you don't notice it.

Don't know why I'm still bothering?

I haven't been enjoying this series since the Naked Empire... possibly even before that. I don't know why I'm still bothering to be honest. probably my own stubbornness and not wanting to quit.

Goodkind has completely lost it on this book. (May he rest in peace.) Either that or he needed to change his editor because this book was just one long waffle. It bored the "spirits" out of me.
it's annoying because I had already given goodkind one last chance with chainfire and I actually really enjoyed that book. So I had hoped we were back on course. Now I don't know what to do. I will probably read the confessor then call it quits.

Sorry, Terry. but Phantom was awful and painful to listen to and could not wait for it to end.

this guy is just wrong

Seriously, I have listened to the entire sreies up until now but this guy has no idea, he is just taking the mick. I posted a negative review about previous readers but n ow I realise that they were quite good; the current reader is atrocious. He has no idea about tempo, nuance or AAARGHHH, he is really bad. If I didn't care about the story I would stop now. It would be good if publishers did nlot rely on " he has a good voice" and went with a narrative that conveyed the story. Disapointing, but only because of the narrative...the story, of course, is compelling.

Inconsistencies & consistent bloviating

While I absolutely love the fantastic world the sword of truth series plays in, the protagonists are unbelievable, act (or rather do not act but talk) in a manner truly illogical, ,while reason and logic is at all times discussed and a hallowed notion. It felt since the first book of the series, as if the author was paid by line or word,, that much unnecessary fluff and endless reflection, discussion or simple pondering is stuffed into almost every chapter. The world literally is going under, while the protagonists engage in endless conversation which oftentimes circles around totally irrelevant issues. Pages and pages, hours of fatiguing, oftentimes frustrating dialogue or monologue. The actual story simply moves in a snail's pace while the heroes talk and talk and talk and talk in endless explanations and tiresome repetitions. Everything is talked and explained to death while in fact nothing really happens, So far almost all books consisted on 99% frustration and a storyline which did not develop with a couple of pages in the end delivering a rather anticlimactic ending. This especially frustrated me personally, as the author seemingly has some deep-rooted psychological issues, delving for hours into every gory aspect of rape and torture, again and again in an almost masochistic mindset, leaving not a second of nastiness out.. while much later these torturers & sadists do not incur real retribution in kind, but usually a quick, painless & anti-climactic death within a few minutes. All in all, the content of all the books of the series could have easily been condensed into a 2h booklet and probably ended up much better that way. Either the author or the editor failed us miserably here.. Endless talk with very little action. The whole thing is a mess. A beautifully designed garden, yet completely overgrown with unnecessary weeds. Especially sad considering that most ingredients for a truly epic sage were apparent. I skipped entire chapters several times throughout the series without losing a beat. I would never in a million years put myself through this effort of reading 12 books of the series again. This was no pleasure... this was hard, frustrating work. And thanks for the nightmares...as if our real world wasn't cruel enough. Please go and see a psychiatrist and get well, Dear Terry.
