About this listen

Piper is a lich-doctor, a physician who works among the dead, determining causes of death for the city guard's investigations. It's a peaceful, if solitary profession . . . until the day when he's called to the river to examine the latest in a series of mysterious bodies, mangled by some unknown force.

Galen is a paladin of a dead god, lost to holiness and no longer entirely sane. He has long since given up on any hope of love. But when the two men and a brave gnole constable are drawn into the maze of the mysterious killer, it's Galen's job to protect Piper from the traps that await them.

He's just not sure if he can protect Piper from the most dangerous threat of all . . .

This story has been my favourite so far, but I love the series so much every book I finish becomes a favourite. The voice acting in this particular book has been fantastic and I could not have been happier with it. Especially the way different paladins voices are differentiated in conversation- marvellous! And the Gnolls are just amazing. I love all the characters so much

Great mystery writing

This book follows Galen. It’s just as funny and sweet as the previous two. I hope there’s a fourth.

Wonderful.

A well written light fantasy with some horror elements, a good grasp of the emotional side of working in medicine and believable world building. There is plenty here to explore, while not getting too bogged down, and I’m looking forward to reading more.

Far from, as other reviewers have suggested, a wall to wall gay smut fest destined to condemn the reader to the seventh circle, this is a queer romance as real as the first two books with similarly graphic (e.g, not particularly graphic) depictions of sex. Perhaps previous reviewers have more problems with gay men than sex, but they still finished the book, didn’t they. Given the blatant queer positive themes in the previous two books, and Swordheart, I wonder if they were really paying attention.

That this trilogy came about when the author got distracted by an idea while writing another book makes my ADHD brain feel incredibly happy, seen, and understood.

Excellent Queer Positive Trilogy

Another great story, narration excellent still, plenty of ‘particularly’ gems littered throughout 😁. Cliffhanger makes sure I will get the next one too!

Excellent series, continues strong

I loved this book! Really happy to finally have an M/M romance in this setting. Galen & Piper are great characters and I loved their development. Also loved how the gnolls are developed in this book, as we get more of a glimpse into their physiology and culture. They’re genuinely fascinating.

Great romantasy

I'm so glad that this author did a gay romance in this series, and it did not disappoint! Just as glorious and fluffy as the other 2 books, and just as much idiot paladin with their self-flagellation foolishness! I also enjoyed the introduction of a discrimination theme with the knowles, and the portrayal of the different cultures - even though it wasn't delved into too deeply, there was enough detail to demonstrate a depth that made it feel real. I absolutely love this author, and the narrator did a great job yet again!

Delightful gay romance!

I struggle to summarise what I find so captivating about this series. I love the well crafted characters, their humour and tenacity constantly simmers away even in the face of danger. Each book in the series has intricately woven threads tying these Paladins together whilst providing a unique story for each of them, they are so enjoyable, I couldn't recommend them enough.

Loved it

I don’t think I’m a prude but I was surprised by the gratuitous (and explicit) sex portrayed in this audiobook. I’ve listened to the first two in the series and enjoyed them - in those books it felt like the plot was driving things and the sex was a result of a believable romance. Unless you feel it is believable for people to stop for oral sex in the middle of a trap filled dungeon I’d stay away from this latest book. What’s next, lesbian gnole on gnole action?

Smutty

The sex scenes are unwarranted and obviously written by someone who has never had sex. The only toe curling was from cringing as the terrible clunky writing. It’s a shame because the story would have been half decent. Gutted that I wasted a credit on this.

Absolute Cringe
