About this listen

Young Rhea is a miller's daughter of low birth, so she is understandably surprised when a mysterious nobleman, Lord Crevan, shows up on her doorstep and proposes marriage. Since commoners don't turn down lords - no matter how sinister they may seem - Rhea is forced to agree to the engagement.

Lord Crevan demands that Rhea visit his remote manor before their wedding. Upon arrival, she discovers that not only was her betrothed married six times before, but his previous wives are all imprisoned in his enchanted castle. Determined not to share their same fate, Rhea asserts her desire for freedom. In answer, Lord Crevan gives Rhea a series of magical tasks to complete, with the threat "Come back before dawn, or else I'll marry you."

With time running out and each task more dangerous and bizarre than the last, Rhea must use her resourcefulness, compassion, and bravery to rally the other wives and defeat the sorcerer before he binds her to him forever.

The story was ok, mostly predictable. The small funny insights from the protagonist were cute. The darkness of the setting helped make it more interesting.

it felt like it took a while to get started. I would have liked more background from the wives. No major twists in the plot. No huge surprises.

The narrator sounded like a 15 year old girl

I guess all I have to say is in the title of this review!

I wouldn't have spent a credit on this book, but I wont be discouraged on trying another T. Kingfisher book.

Ok beginning, predictable middle, cute end.

Highly enjoyable, quirky read. The narration perfectly suits the story, usually narration annoys me ,but this works. It enhances the world and characters of the book

Great book

I don't usually write reviews, but this book is really worth a review. I downloaded it on a whim and have enjoyed it immensely, it's quirky, funny, dark and rolls along at a good pace. The narration is really good too (something I don't say often) Try it you may just like it.

wonderful story told well

The narrator did a wonderful job of this not-so-cosy bedtime story, I enjoyed the whole thing from start to finish! Rhea is a brave, smart, tricksy heroine who I hope the author returns to some day.

Fantastical and fun, with a good dollop of shivers

I've wanted to try T kingfishers books for ages and I'm really sad to say I couldn't get into this one, I genuinely think I would like reading it though. DNF at about 1/3 of the way in. partially due to the narrator who is American ( absolutely not your fault I'm so sorry) and does sound like they are a teenager ( which again, the female main character is 15 y o throughout so a fitting voice ) BUT the voice as accurate as it is, is not something I want to engage to listen to. I will try reading this though.

probably a good story but i couldn't get into listening to it. I'll try to read it though
