The only thing in Colin Mulligan's life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he's ashamed of. He's dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lie the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.

My only criticism is that unlike Book 1, where I felt that it ended perfectly with Daniel & Rex. With Book 2, I wanted soo much more! After a life time of darkness, it felt like we got we only got to see only the very beginning of Colin and Raf's happiness together.

You know the phrase 'from the SUBLIME to the ridiculous' ...well, in this instance, it's most definitely the other way around. Robert Nieman's performance of the first story in the series was in all honesty a huge disappointment, I was distinctly underwhelmed. As this title wasn't my favourite in the series anyway, I had absolutely no intention of buying it UNTIL it popped up in my Audible feed and I noticed who the narrator was...I couldn't download it quickly enough then.
Now onto the story. No, I didn't like Colin anymore than I did reading the story. I still despise him and he was still a Dick with a capital D, so deeply closeted he wasn't anywhere near that darned Narnian wardrobe, so much self-hatred, self-denial and self-loathing that sometimes you just wanted to say 'f**k it, get on with it then', and so much envy and jealousy aimed at his younger brother Daniel for living the life that he, Colin, didn't have the guts to live, that all he seemed to do was spew vile, nasty, hateful things and sometimes even be violent towards Daniel. Of course, that worsened when their racist bigot of a father died, and Daniel appeared at the funeral with Rex in tow and caught Colin being hugged by Rafe...understandably Daniel lost it having discovered that Colin had been living a lie.
Did I feel more empathetic towards Colin after Spencer's reading?? Maybe....a teeny, tiny bit but I have to say that he's still one of my most detested characters [and I know I'm not alone in that opinion].
So, I gave 4 stars for the story in my initial review of the book cos, you know, I may think Colin's a complete douche, but I can still appreciate a good story when I read one. The story stays at 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars, but for Spencer's narration?? There aren't enough stars available....

What made the experience of listening to Out of Nowhere the most enjoyable?
Spencer Goss' narration was so good, and I think he managed to convey Colin's anguish, pain and self-hatred perfectly, that perhaps doesn't come across quite so clearly in the written word only.Rafe's patience and gentleness was instrumental in Colin's "healing", and Spencer's Rafe showed that.
What does Spencer Goss bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The gentleness of Rafe, yet he shows Rafe has a steel core which helped him overcome his own demons and is needed when Colin reached the bottom.Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book made me cry (both when I read it and when I listened to it), yet when it was over I felt happy that Colin and Rafe were in a good place both individually and as a couple.It's not an easy book to either read or listen to, but it's important as it shows how damaging (internalized) homophobia is or can be. Words can and do break people every day!

I really like Spencer Goss' voice, both his cadence, modulation and his ability to also do "normal" female voices {i.e. no falsetto. ;)}, and I look forward to listen to him again.Heartbreakingly sad but yet sooo good

I loved the first book and was disappointed the narrator was different but ended up preferring him to the first one (Robert Nieman) .Roan Parrish creates a great story line that in some places actually bought a tear to my eye and Spencer Goss executes the characters perfectly.

Roan Parrish shapes the story around Colin in a way where we can see him grow and see why he is the way he is. The character arc is heartwarming
