best book ever

I have read the whole series apart from the last book which I will get around to soon enough. The books are entertaining enough and I don't have any criticism of the writing or narration. My only gripe is that each book of the ten or so seem like half a book.

I think the author has been a bit too knowing on how to squeeze as much cash out as possible from the series. If for example a series like The Wandering Inn took the same approach it's 3 books would be more like 15! The Wandering Inn series is a top notch series too so it's not quantity over quality either. That's the reason I've knocked a star off .

Only one problem with this book

The audio kept me entertained and wanting more, the narrator did a wonderful job at character voicing and pacing. The story was well done and flowed nicely, my only issues were a few repetitions where the MC was told the same thing about the game system by different people and didn’t know the issue each time. A few things forgotten along the way can be overlooked as the plot worked well.

Well done novel and audio execution

As a first book, this wasn't a bad read for this genre. I'm used to longer books than this, so it did feel a little short and left off in an awkward spot as I'm not a fan of those type of up in the air endings when you have to wait ages normally for books to come out.

I nearly gave up on this very early on because for some reason the author has decided to make his character a moron. Want nearly caused me to give up was the MC's first actions when he got into the world. Despite the fact it isn't a game he keeps calling it a game. Despite knowing he has limited respawns he treats the idea of dying with a shrug of his shoulders. He decides to pull a James Bond type action where he used a coffin to escape down a mountain only the MC uses a shield. I mean how did he expect that to turn out exactly? And why do it at all? When that costs he said shield and his sword, does he go and try to find them? Nope. Why? Because monsters might have eaten them. Yes, monsters eat god forged legendary weapons all the time. They are great food sources and easy to eat and digest. So good in fact they are all giving up on flesh as a food source.

Still, after that it wasn't a bad read on the whole and I quite enjoyed it. It needs more work, as there really isn't much new here, and the continued stupid behaviour continues to the point I felt the author was forcing it. By that I mean the MC knows he must not show himself to be from another wold but keeps on using words and phrases that are obviously not going to be understood by the other people from the world he is on. Like he keeps calling people, "dude", or "buddy" and uses phrases like, "Out of the frying pan and into the fire."

For the most part the book is okay and as a base first book it is worth a read. It's not the best of this genre, but there are far worse ones out there too. I gave it 3 stars for the story, but I'd likely have pushed it to 3.5 if I could have. It's not quite a four, but not a 3 either. Very slightly above average because of the annoyances I had with the character being more moronic than I believed anyone actually would be in reality knowing they needed to be careful.

Some good, some bad.

At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it but that quickly changed! I’ll definitely check out the next in the series.

Really enjoyable book

I mostly enjoyed this. I felt that there was a little too much in the way of edgy content for the sake of edginess. It didn’t really add to the story, but didn’t detract from it. It was a nice, fast listen and I enjoyed the narration. I’ll probably wait for a combined volume to continue the story, as the individual books are on the shorter side.

The visceral combat

Honesty I have enjoyed the story. Unlike many other books of its type the book doesn't spend too much time on the combats. In many other books these can be far too long, far too contrived and ultimately boring. Instead the focus is on the character and his story. The character is not an obviously special person but that is also a good point.
The far too frequent swearing however, while could be taken as in character, is also just not necessary and does take the shine off the experience for me.

Nice story pity about all the swearing

With a lot of books in this genre I wasn’t sure what to expect but this was unique, interesting and Neil Hellegers narrating is truly magnificent!

I am delighted to have a new series to listen to and can’t wait to work through the other books.

Fantastic book and outstanding reader!
