About this listen

A comical, fantastical and witty re-imagining of the Tudor world, perfect for fans of The Princess Bride.

Lady Jane Grey, 16, is about to be married to a total stranger – and caught up in an insidious plot to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But that’s the least of Jane’s problems. She’s also about to become Queen of England. Like that could go wrong.

I knew in the first 30 mins or so of listening to this audiobook, that I was going to enjoy this book. The style of writing and audiobook narration really harkened back to the Tudor period and was seamless; the fact that this book had three authors was not noticeable at all. I do recommend the audiobook and was surprised to see not many reviews of it on Audible.

I liked how all three main characters had a satisfying story arc. I also liked the Ethian twist in the story, it was embedded and executed really well making for very good comic moments. The story didn’t take itself too seriously which made this a smooth read.

Jane and G’s love story also seemed realistic in the arranged marriage fashion that it was and evolved well with memorable lines like “I want to argue with no one else but you.” The authors successfully delivered what was promised, a happy ending to Lady Jane Grey as she so deserved.

This book was just shy of 5 full stars for me. One minor reason being is I would have liked to know a bit more about Ethian magic, what are its origins. I don’t know if Ethians are mentioned in other books of the My Janies series but it would be great if it all ties up together. My main reason for not giving the book 5 stars is that I felt the book dragged on for longer than I would’ve liked especially with the bear fight, although I do see it as a bonding moment between Edward and G. I would have also liked more character details and developments for Gracie and Mary, respectively.

A thoroughly enjoyable listen with absurd humour and light hearted story telling. The narrator has put in a lot of effort with the performance and it matches the tone of the book well.
