About this listen

When Hannah Allen was fourteen years old, she was abducted by an elusive serial killer, Peter Harris. Intended to be his eleventh victim, she was his only survivor. Ten years later, therapy and friendship have helped Hannah overcome the trauma of her past. But then a body is found, a body bearing eerily similar injuries to Peter’s victims, complete with the numerical brand he forced upon his captives. Soon it becomes clear that somewhere someone is continuing Peter’s work. Somewhere someone wants Hannah dead. Can she survive a serial killer twice, or has her luck finally run out?

This was my first listen of 2024 and wow!! What a way to start the year. This book is sooo good. It is very dark, twisted, very compelling and can definitely be described as 'unputdownable'. The writing and plotting are superb, and although the book deals with some very dark subjects, there are also stories of survival and human kindness. The characters in the book are all portrayed brilliantly, especially Hannah and I really felt for her because Jess depicts the trauma that Hannah went through and her struggle to just survive so realistically that I felt like I was walking in Hannah's shoes at times. There are several twists and with the long list of suspects I was left guessing right to the end. This author was new to me but I'll certainly be looking up her previous books!

I wasn't sure about the narration by Penelope Rawlins at first, but it soon grew on me and I ended up thinking it was perfect for the book.

Superb!

My first by this author. Loved it. Really well written, twisty and surprising with a very satisfying ending. The characters are easy to invest in, particularly the MC. Narration excellent too. I’d definitely recommend checking this one out!

Fantastic

Just dreadful. Chapters of inane drivel lead to an absurd twist, and an ending so unsatisfactory that you'll question your decision to buy books based on the recommendation of strangers.
