Critic reviews

Absolutely terrific . . . genuinely touching . . . every one of its many characters, no matter how small their part, is beautifully rounded out (Jenny Colgan)
Worth the decade it took to arrive . . . This is a proper family saga, both deliciously old-fashioned and full of surprising reversals (Alex Preston)
Love Marriage is enormously satisfying in its inventions and observations, and its exploration of cultural diversity in Britain. At once touching and satirical . . . as engrossing and enjoyable as Brick Lane (David Sexton)
Monica Ali's rich, sensitive and gloriously entertaining novel . . . brim[s] with extremely funny moments of excruciating social comedy . . . For all its precise comic timing and consummate plotting, the novel's real strength lies in its depiction of complex social encounters, leaving the reader to decide which side, if any, to take . . . [A] love letter to the richness of London life (Tash Aw)
Wildly entertaining . . . Filled with people who are not just likeable, but loveable. This contract of sympathy, which flows between reader and characters, deepens and enriches the portrait of contemporary London that Ali creates with a confident Dickensian sweep (Susie Boyt)
This is such a gloriously vibrant and tender novel packed with wit, intelligence and wisdom. It has everything - clashing cultures, family rifts, suppressed addictions, desire, passion. Her two junior doctor protagonists are superbly drawn - flawed, courageous, flailing, human. Just brilliant (Rachel Clarke)
Funny, warm, powerful . . . Love Marriage has a warm intelligence and a sharp observational power, making the characters and the world of the story feel very alive (Diana Evans)
A truly astonishing piece of writing - exquisite storytelling, featuring the most human portrayal of doctors I've ever read. I defy you to put this book down (Adam Kay)

Beautifully written.
Sensitive. A human story, a slice of life. Look forward to more novels written by this author.

Favourite book of 2023

An engaging descent into the psychosocial labyrinth in which culture, career, background and identity manage to entangle us. It’s multilayered nature surprises, stretches and disturbs. Ayesha Dharker’s narration is outstanding. Sensitive, beautiful, impassioned and expressive of the unfolding drama. It stopped being a narration and became a dramatisation. An excellent book.

INTELLIGENT UNEXPECTED BRILLIANT

This book was recommended by my cousin , She mostly has a good taste soI i was not dissapoited, it’s a story about relationship, and its struggles from daily life made just a bit different by the family of the main character, but the-story unfolds steadily but never boring , and very well narrated

To understand everything you need to listen to everything. At times I thought why am I needing to hear all of this but towards the end you realise how richly layered this story telling is and that only by hearing it all do you truly appreciate the end.

An intriguing story

my favourite Monica Ali book is In the Kitchen but this may come a close second. I would give it five stars though I felt it lost its way a little in the middle but I did enjoy how Ali brought it all together at the end and finally after her getting on my nerves for some time I finally warmed to Jasmine who constantly whined about her brother needing to grow up when she was in fact the one who needed to do all the growing. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who is a fan of the genre.

not my favourite of her works but very enjoyable

This is not for someone looking for a thriller- it is a sensitive journey through the life of a family. Lots of surprises and thrilling moments. I just loved it and learnt so much through the lives of the characters.
