About this listen

In July 1973, Bob Tininenko, his wife Linda, and his brother in-law Jim Fisher set sail from Tacoma, Washington, on a 31-foot trimaran, down the West Coast to Costa Rica. The journey was expected to take a matter of weeks, but 10 days into the cruise, the party encountered a freak storm off the coast of Northern California. When gale-force winds and 50-foot waves capsized their boat, the voyage became a nightmare.

For 72 days, the trio was lost at sea. Challenged by nature and compromised by a bitter rivalry, their courage and will to live was put to the ultimate test. Jim, the owner and skipper of the boat, was a devout fundamentalist whose recognition of God's will in every event brought him into increasing conflict with his brother-in-law. As the two men battled to take control of a dire situation, Linda kept a secret that would lead to heartrending tragedy.

A "hair-raising" (Houston Chronicle) account of shipwreck and survival and a searing portrait of faith without reason, Lost! is an unforgettable true story from "a writer of tremendous power and achievement" (Detroit Free Press).

So much more than a survival story. Thought provoking and enlightening drawing contrast between religious and humanist world views.

Fascinating and enthralling

Really good historical account of the capcizing of a Trimaran and the loss of life and survival of the crew. A gret exqmple of how a person who feels righteously that they "know Gods will", kills people. No spoiler, but suffice it to say, speeding up Gods will, by doing idiotic things, kills people. Secondly, not keeping control of a vessel in a storm resulting in 3 knockdowns in 15 minutes, sinks boats. Bottom line, you had best pick your crewmates based on seamanship skills and rationality, not religious fatalism.

3 people on a boat, 1 religious lunatic. 2 dead people.

Portrayal of fear

One of the survivors is so clearly deluded and insufferable, how the other guy put up with him ill never know. Threw away food and supplies, didn't have radio licence and in general was a religious nut job. At one point the normal guy lit a fire when in sight of land to get rescued, the nut job freaked out saying it wasn't God's plan and the normal guy apologised. Wtf? The secret the woman has is that she's pregnant so not really worth reading to find out. I had to stop with 2 hours left because the 2 idiots that were left.

Painful at times to listen

Nautical incompetence meets Noah's Ark - with a little bit of animal cruelty thrown in for good measure. The tyranny of matter confirmed at every level with the pretence of miracle working thrown in. A must read for every fan of US anti-intellectualism and utter stupidity of every level. An excellent platform to demonstrate that sexism and self-delusion can exist side by side in a harmonious manner. I found myself chuckling all the way through - hoping no one would survive but the innocent tuna!

Christian Propaganda

I had high hopes for an epic story but actually it is all pretty tragic in the end. The guy that reads it sounds like an AI bot and I had to dismiss this from my suspicions constantly. The writer sets a nasty religious tone which puts you off every time Jim starts praying! The worst thing about the whole story is they seem to miss out on the entire rescue, which makes me wonder whether they accidentally missed a chapter. One minute they are praying while in their upturned boat, then the next minute they are in a berth on a container ship. I would avoid this book at all costs.

Tragic story, tragically written and narrated
