About this listen

Three years into his solo adventure in rural France, Michael Wright believes he has everything he ever wanted: a ramshackle house, several manly power tools, a cat, a grand piano, and a vintage aircraft. Three unfulfilled wishes from his childhood begin to haunt him. He wants to grow one perfect potato. He wants to know how it feels to fly a Spitfire. And, more than anything, he wants to meet his soul mate.

Michael Wright’s heart-warming new book reveals how a solitary man can learn to accept being single…. Or so he thinks, until a magic alligator, a bumptious American Labrador, and the perils of landing a light aircraft conspire to offer a glimpse of a romance that promises to turn his whole world upside-down.

Highly recommended, lovely style of writing all enhanced by being read by the author himself. It made me laugh out loud yet also it is touchingly emotional in places. I can't believe Michael hasn't written beyond this 2nd book, please write more!!

Superb and entertaining!

Having read Michael Wright's first book of moving to France this was his follow up and it was even better!
He reads it himself which he does with a voice that takes you through the journey with him and you share in all the humour and charm that he brings to the story. I loved it from start to finish, all the characters that he brings to life and the final episode of his quest to find a partner is a complete delight!
I cant wait for his next book - he has that unique style to like him immediatley and more!

Loved it!

Beautifully written and read, full of self deprecating gentle humour, Michael Wright is now on my 'dream dinner party guest list'

Share in the rural French idyll

I really enjoyed this. He really draws you into his world and makes you feel like you're out there with him on his isolated hill. The downside of that is that you can get quite frustrated by his little foibles - more than once I found myself wanting to shout "get a grip of yourself, it's only a bloody chicken" at my ipod, but I suppose that's part and parcel of an honest account of life. Another slightly annoying tendency is the way he often leaves a story hanging and returns to it only in passing. Even if it's only an insignificant event, you want to know how it concludes. But overall a very good and engaging listen

An excellent and honest account

If you could sum up Je t'aime à La Folie in three words, what would they be?

Colourful, deep and exciting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Je t'aime à La Folie?

For me, when the author approached the organist, in the small French village and asked to be able to play the organ at services. The church was Catholic and Michael being Anglican, new to France, showed his braveness for putting his hand up here, was so well written. Michael was willing to step-up in so many ways in rural France, with language and cultural differences between his previous English/urban life and this new country life. I can see so many of the characters he wrote of, so clearly in my minds eye.

Have you listened to any of Michael Wright’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I have not, can't wait to listen to more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

His care and love of his tiny sheep!

Any additional comments?

I could not recommend a book more than this one. Thanks.

Beautiful listening, could listen again easily.

Having listened to Michaels first book C’est La Folie, I was pleased to find that he’d written a sequel.

Michael still has a wonderful way of conveying his feelings be them sad or humorous and although it was wonderful to see him or listen to him describe how his life slowly came together including a flight in a Spitfire and a copine, I couldn’t help but feel sad that his tales of a bachelor had come to an end.

I’ve heard it said that satisfaction is the death of desire!

All in all I’ve really enjoyed these books and wish Michael and his family all the best for the future.

I love the authors writing and narration but...

I was rather underwhelmed by Michael Wright's prequel to this book because I simply thought he'd written it a little too prematurely and hence had very little to say. What this sequel does is continue the quality writing but adds the content that was previously lacking. Ably read by Michael himself, Je t'aime a la folie is filled with all of life's important stuff, love, laughter and friendship. It was a pleasure listening to this book and you can't help thinking that Michael Wright is an incredibly lucky man to lead the life he leads. Michael's positivity and appreciation of his life shines throughout the book and for me has elevated this book to a five star read. If I have one criticism it's that Michael can be a little bit too self deprecatory at times; always stating he's the worlds worst at one thing or another, this can get a little tiresome but set in the context of an otherwise excellent book I can forgive him this one minor indiscretion.

C'est magnifique
