About this listen

The apocalypse is coming, but only a lucky—or perhaps unlucky—few know.

Silas is inducted into the System, becoming the last in a long line of Earth's "forerunners." The rewards are great, but the danger is greater. We are not alone in the universe. The fate of five worlds hangs on how their forerunners perform.

Will Silas have what it takes to win Earth a place in the multiverse? Or will Earth become another mining world stripped of all resources and left a barren husk floating in the cosmos?

A system-enforced secret, a deadly challenge, and only a year to go. The countdown begins now!

Nice Litrpg works well

Im focused on detail - a time of 29 minutes for 10km would put you in the top 700 worldwide of all time. The coach would be utterly amazed. Mid 30s would make you a good college track runner get the small things right. Otherwise i really enjoyed.

A great start to an earth apocalypse LITRPG

This is a great twist on the idea of earth being enrolled into the multiverse, with a few “forerunners” leading the way before the rest of the world, fighting for their place.

It has good pacing, lots of action, a relatable MC, and those sweet sweet stats we all love, but put in their own chapters so they can be skipped if you want.

Add to that Sean dropping both pop culture references and enough references to other LITRPG books to make it meta without being cringe, and you have a great start to what I hope will be an epic series.

Lastly, it’s read by the one and only Travis Baldree, so what’s not to love?

A real surprise - thoroughly enjoyed !

I didn't really know what to expect from this book, but I enjoyed it immensely. The pacing was great, the main character has (what i would judge) as a very realistic reaction to circumstances and the author uses the unique perspective to give great examples of their moral dilemma. This helps you to get to know them a lot better a lot sooner and avoid the usual exposition - more in the vein of "show" not "tell".

Very much enjoyed

Solid world building with relatable main character

I didn’t expect this to be so good! The story is pretty tight, adding character development, world building and a few distinct adventures without meandering too far.

I won’t go into details, but the system is flexible and allows for a lot of creativity.

A nice touch is that the stat sheets are in their own chapters, so you can skip them if they’re not your jam (I think this should be a standard practice for the genre).

I also appreciate that the author glosses over a lot of the notifications, only reading them out when they can add context or further the plot.

As for the progression curve, the main character grows pretty quickly but the inclusion of much stronger characters gives a sense of scale, saving it from feeling rushed.

The narration is flawless.

If you like “He Who Fights with Monsters”, I think you’ll like this too.

Great story and narration

Over the years I’ve read so many system induction LitRPG books and I started to get a bit jaded, but I’m glad I read this book. This story follows a popular trope and doesn’t have many new concepts but the way it’s written kept it interesting. The MC is realistic and his decision making is actually believable. The side characters are a bit 2-dimensional, but it doesn’t take away from the story. The world building has a unique spin on how new worlds are inducted into the system. Oh and of course, Travis Baldree does an exceptional job of getting you fully immersed in the action. I can’t wait for the next instalment. Just wish I could read ahead on RoyalRoad or something…

I enjoyed it

I have enjoyed listening. I just do hope that the story has an ending somewhere down the line. I’ve listened to many of this type of book and just as you get invested in the character and the story they don’t write anymore.

Banger

The characters are relateable, the story is well written, and the dialogue is smooth. Pop-culture references galore and nods at other LiT RPG stories, but it's all presented in a way that leaves out the cringe. Excellent!

Interesting concept

Easy to follow and understand, engaging story. Will be happy to continue listening to this series, and as always, an excellent performance by Travis.
