Rejected by a sister who has allowed her new status as wife to Mr. Bingley to make her proud, Elizabeth Bennet goes to her uncle's estate in Derbyshire, ostensibly to assist her cousin in her introduction to society. In reality, Elizabeth feels there is nothing left for her in the neighborhood of her birth.

Her uncle's estate is small, and Elizabeth must work while there, and though she finds her tasks easy to bear. She quickly becomes close to her young cousin and uncle, though her aunt is a hard, demanding woman, who seems to hold a grudge against Elizabeth. But she also meets many friends, including the daughter of an earl, and the handsome friend of her sister Jane's new husband, a Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

As Elizabeth is slowly pulled from her melancholy, new vistas open up to her, and she realizes that she can still have everything she has ever wished to have. But the jealousy of a woman who is no friend of her courtship with a wealthy man threatens her newfound happiness, and the coming of a sister who rejected her has the potential to once again disrupt Elizabeth's life and destroy her future.

The story was great. Nice and long, and we didn’t have to wait until the end for the characters to fall in love. However readers voice grated on me

I have always loved Jann Rowland’s variations. They are interesting and well written, as is In the Wilds of Derbyshire but the narration ruined this book for me.

This is my first listening to the narrator Mary Sarah and her style, accent, pronunciation and mispronunciation greatly detracted from the wonderful storyline.

It sounds as though English is not Mary Sarah’s first language as even the name Mary is mispronounced as Marry or Merry and continually varied.

This will put me off listening to any other Jann Rowlands narrated books as they all appear to be narrated by Mary Sarah which is an incredible shame.

I would love to hear this book narrated by Stevie Zimmerman. ❣️

A very different, but plausible variation. Without her family to embarrass Lizzy, and with Darcy on his home ground, the angst all comes from outside sources. From their initial attraction to the slow, steady, well considered building of their relationship and their growing love, the romance between them is sweet and real.

The narration is sometimes a bit stilted but generally quite good, although I got the impression that the English accent was not how Mary Sarah sounds naturally. There were also some odd pronunciations (e.g. Lutton instead of Luton, Mrs Ainsley instead of Mrs Annesley, fother instead of father, ornt instead of aunt etc...). On the positive side, the voices of different characters are generally clear.

I enjoyed this version of P&P, but it was marred by the very strange narration. The odd pronunciation of words 'Fother' 'Ont' 'in foct' being the most obvious, odd hesitation in the middle of sentences and words - piono forte made it clear that British English is not her natural accent. It is enough to make me not want to listen to other books by this author as sadly, they all seem to be narrated by her.

I enjoyed the story, however the narration was odd to say the least. There was a strange pronunciation of the letter a as in aunt and father. Also she slipped back to, I’m guessing, her American accent. I stuck it through but it definitely lessened my enjoyment.
