About this listen

The Mediterranean, 1943... The HMS Rob Roy. A tiny machine, just 230 feet from stem to stern. In peacetime she would have trawled for cod. Now her catch is deadlier by far. Lieutenant-Commander Ian Ransome is a veteran of the treacherous front line of naval combat. For three years, he’s swept the explosive curtain of Nazi mines that shrouds the British Isles. Now, under sealed orders in the battle-tossed waters of the Mediterranean, he and his jack-tired crew face one final test of their courage and seamanship under fire. Their secret mission: to spearhead the Allies’ desperate invasion of Italy.

My father introduced me to Douglas Reeman a long time ago and this book has to be a big favourite.
This book I find tells more about Naval life in the ships both mentally and emotionally than any other from the aspect of minesweepers to convoys and the loss of precious ships. A real good all rounder of life on the dangerous seas.
As always the personal life as are bought into the book as Douglas always does so well
Once started its hard to stop listening to the book being read with great feeling so you can imagine you are actually there. Not a book to listen to only once and you won't be disappointed

Absolutely a big favourite

I really enjoyed listening to the book and a good story, however every time it’s David Rintoul and his narration or performance that is captivating. I read one of the Douglas Reeman books recently and I really missed the story telling it’s that David seems to bring the story and the characters to life.

Another good book, hard to stop listening.

Not a modern book but it was a fast read when it first came out and I for one loved it. Alas time has moved on and writing with it. Today's writers are more able to describe the scenario with more emphasis.

This should not detract from Reemans evident talent. If you are into naval stories from the world wars this is worth a listen.

Interesting

Not as exciting as many of the novels by the author. Minor romances slow the story down. The author emphasises the role of the lowly Minesweepers. As usual the performance by David Rintoul is superb.

Disappointing.

Brilliant well written story of life in small RN ships during the war with a special emphasis on the sailors lives both their working and personal lives. Much enjoyed for a ex RN veteran

Excellent story of life in small ships during the war

Listening to this book will tell you about some aspects of Royal Navy life in minesweepers during the Second World War. As usual with Douglas Reeman there is much soul searching and self doubt expressed by the main characters - can be tiresome especially as it is difficult to fast forward. For me, this book is best at describing the day to day life of the minesweeper and the lives of the officers and ratings and their duties. The less convincing passages deal with the family lives of officers and crew. Overall it was an enjoyable yarn well read as always by David rintoul.

I’m normally enthralled by Douglas Tee man’s stories but I found this one a bit hard going. First half was quite good but once the love interests started it got a bit too ‘Mills and Boony’ for me.

I much prefer sea action to bed action.

Not the usual.
