About this listen

Impressions of Theophrastus Such is a work of fiction by George Eliot, first published in 1879. It was Eliot's last published writing and her most experimental, taking the form of a series of literary essays by an imaginary minor scholar whose eccentric character is revealed through his work.

Wonderful that Audible have made this Librivox amateur recording more widely available but scandalous they should charge readers for a performance which is in the public domain.

It's a curious, fascinating, first person series of literary spoofs, very well handled by the amateur American reader but we really deserve a professional English actor doing the work.

A fascinating oddity

The perfection of the writing, by an unequalled artist at the end and at the pinnacle of her career. I’m now starting again from scratch and making sure I don’t miss a word.

The reader’s style was challenging at first, but as the book progressed I could see exactly why he was chosen for this particular reading.

The audio went a bit echoey in parts towards the end, but by that stage it was too engrossing to matter.

Perfection: George Eliot at her very best.
