About this listen

In this long-awaited and candid memoir, Hitchens re-traces the footsteps of his life to date, from his childhood in Portsmouth, with his adoring, tragic mother and reserved Naval officer father; to his life in Washington DC, the base from which from he would launch fierce attacks on tyranny of all kinds. Along the way, he recalls the girls, boys and booze; the friendships and the feuds; the grand struggles and lost causes; and the mistakes and misgivings that have characterised his life.

Hitch-22 is, by turns, moving and funny, charming and infuriating, enraging and inspiring. It is an indispensable companion to the life and thought of our pre-eminent political writer.

Narrated by Christopher Hitchens himself shortly before his untimely death, this is a poignant listening experience.

Christophers life as recorded in this book answers the question. With great honesty Christopher reviews the parts of his life that formed his opinions and world view. The answer to the question is to read deeply and widely. Returning to the same books at different times of life. TheTo also actually go and visit these places and talk with the participants. To become part of the debate. To get to the know the participants truely one must drink with them; long into the night and still be able to keep your wits about you. Christopher was a master at this. Hearing Christophers own voice reading the book made the listen personal and meaning filled. Worth every penny and every second spent listening and relistening.

Would you consider the audio edition of Hitch-22 to be better than the print version?

I think the print version must undoubtedly be better than this audiobook.

What didn’t you like about Christopher Hitchens’s performance?

The change of volume and intonation of his voice within every sentence.

Any additional comments?

I had to abandon listening to this book less than a quarter of the way through because of the narration. Christopher Hitchins not only lowered his voice at the end of each sentence but also with every phrase in that sentence so that I was constantly having to rewind to discover the words that he had swallowed. This lead to a disjointed flow of the narration for me and I would advise anyone thinking of buying this audiobook to listen to the sample first.
I have ordered the print version from my local library. Shame.

Spoiled by the narration

Another great book by the master Christopher Hitchens, also narrated by him which is always such a treat!!!

Gone but not forgotten :)

I was intrigued by Christopher Hitchens after watching and listening to him debate. A man of great intellect with a superb ‘working knowledge’ of literature, history and philosophy. I did however feel his opinions on religion, which I respect and understand but do not agree with, somewhat overshadowed his other works, thinking and experiences. From Belfast to the Lebanon and Iraq he had put himself in harms way and I came to appreciate his integrity, honesty and empathy. My only regret is that I was not better versed in literature and philosophy to understand some of his more detailed discussions.

I’ve changed my mind about this man

The world is a much poorer place without Hitch. A must listen for anyone interested in the wonder that he was.

Worth listening to over & over again

nice way of seeing into the way he thinks and why he developed his thought process the way he did

awesome

Hitch's mind was truly one of the greatest ever housed in a primate's skull. So extremely lucid and with the most incredible command of language he gives a thought-provoking backstory to how he accumulated an almost super-natural like body of wisdom in relation to our shared humanity. Privileged to have listened to this book and recommend that you do too.

Stunning

Loved it. True inspiration. Hate that he's not here. Recommended to everyone who's interested in intellectual.

For those of you who are on the left, this memoir may sound akin to Goldstein's Confession.
On the contrary. Mr Hitchens speaks more of being true to oneself, rather than being loyal to a doctrine ( and, eventually, a Dogma.)

Hitch 22. I miss this man and his wit.
