About this listen
Like so many of the most popular classic novels, it's Tolstoy's delicate and insightful exploration of what it means to be human that makes Anna Karenina such a valuable work. There's no denying that it transcends time to touch the hearts of contemporary listeners.
Anna Karenina seems to have everything - beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son. But she feels that her life is empty until the moment she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky.
Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

I appreciate the need to differentiate the internal and external dialogue, but if you're doing that, can you PLEASE increase the recording volume so the listeners don't have to keep turning up the volume to hear and then go deaf when the dialogue transfers between the characters.
Also, towards the end, it seems that the "translation" seems to suffer. especially if you don't understand French!
somebody needs to work on the modulation

This is a real gift from the ‘included’ catalogue: I would probably not have bothered with it otherwise but this translation and reading are quite wonderful. AI found the Thandiwe Newton version of ‘war and Peace’ impossible to listen to because to my taste she really hams it up - acts it rather than simply letting the text soeak for itself, and it’s a very thin line between her style and the more dynamically nuanced one of this reader who is in any case more experienced. When you’re in for the long haul like this you need that extra bit of restraint so that you don’t end up with ‘loud and very loud’.
This is a rally special gift.
