About this listen

A classic Poirot mystery read by Hugh Fraser.

An outbreak of kleptomania at a student hostel was not normally the sort of crime that aroused Hercule Poirot’s interest. But when he saw the list of stolen and vandalized items – including a stethoscope, some old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed rucksack and a diamond ring found in a bowl of soup – he congratulated the warden, Mrs Hubbard, on a ‘unique and beautiful problem’.

The list made absolutely no sense at all. But, reasoned Poirot, if this was merely a petty thief at work, why was everyone at the hostel so frightened?

Critic reviews

"Poirot's return to the happy hunting grounds of detective fiction is something of an event...The thumbnail sketches of the characters are as good as ever and in spite of the over-elaborate nature of the puzzle there is plenty of entertainment." ( Times Lite)

Fantastic to hear Hugh Frasser reading another classic Agatha Christie. Different from ITV version and so interesting to see the changes made in that adaptation.

Brilliant

From 1955 post-war Britain, this book is set in a diverse student household. It's an amazing insight into what a newly multi racial Britain was really like. Christie has always picked up on the more subtle aspects of human behaviour, and this is no exception. Its also interesting to see how jobs, like Miss Lemons sister's, have disappeared too.

Hugh Fraser's narration is as excellent as ever.

Good but not my fav Poirot, didn't love the characters and I missed the high society settings etc. Was still good and worth the listen.

Good

Interesting characters, with lots of plot twists, Poirot on form, as usual. A Good listen overall, narrated by the Wonderful Hugh Fraser.

Lots of Plot twists

As usual, great narration by Hugh Fraser. Poirot in his later years, a nice little plot with plenty of twists.

Good story - high body count for a Christie

Hugh Fraser (Captain Hastings opposite David Suchet in Poirot) is fantastic at reading this story. His voice brings the storyline to life. Brilliant narration & an excellent story from Agatha Christie.

Great Adaptation

Another great story by Agatha Christie and superbly narrated by Hugh Fraser. Poirot isn't in the story as much as you think a lot of the work is done by Inspector Sharpe that's why the books are better than the shows Poirot does figure it out and Inspector Sharpe is a great character not a dumb policeman.

Enjoyable whodunnit.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Fast paced, and narrated/performed superbly, as always, by the brilliant Hugh Fraser.

Great story

Interesting if complicated plot and characters not quite as engaging as usual but well read by Hugh Fraser as usual.
Likeable whodunnit that’ll keep you guessing

Typically convoluted Christie and inscrutable Poirot
