About this listen

A Minka Lesk Audiobook

Cadia has fallen. Last to escape the hell that was the Thirteenth Black Crusade's destruction of their home world, the Cadian 101st are bloodied, but unbroken as they fight to prove they deserve the legacy that was left to them.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Captain Minka Lesk returns and is tested as never before. As she leads her regiment in the Gallows Cluster, she must deal with a threat she's never seen – a jungle that wants to eat her troops alive!

THE STORY

When a new threat surges through the Gallows Cluster, jeopardising the stability of the entire warfront, the 101st are thrown into the breach. As loyal fortresses fall on the world of Alia, Minka Lesk’s company leads the mad gambit that is the last hope of turning the tide. But when the jungle itself is as deadly as any enemy, can Minka keep her troopers fighting as her regiment fractures around her?

Which is pretty normal if you have followed minka and her companions over the series, I almost thought that this was going to be the end for her and 7th company, really enjoyed it and the epilogue gives us more enemies to fight

Death and mayhem

Minka Lesk has become one of the best Astra Militarum commanders to read about. She is up there with Gaunt and Caiphas Cain.

Minka Lesk story

Another full throttle story of the 101st. Full of twists and savage turns. I have always admired an auther willing to have their protagonists suffer mass casualties! This really does the 40k world justice.

Brutally good story.

Amazing

Some unexpected twists and as brutal as ever, when you read Justin’s work expect nothing less.

A good performance by the narrator.

A strong finish and good world building

I really enjoyed this book and I loved the characters and their progress so far and others a bit unsuspecting or unfortunate timing. all in all fun listening especially if you heard the previous felt a bit rushed at the end but you could see the pieces lining up but the very final part is intriguing.

Great addition to the series

The first half of the book spends a little too long in the jungle and setting the stage, but the payoff is an enjoyable and bloody piece of bolter porn. There's not much room for interesting character development; everyone in the 101st knows their duty and does it, with only a few concessions for human frailty. If you're familiar with the characters and their journeys you'll get more out of it, but I missed the darker aspects of the Imperium seen in Cadian Honour and Traitor Rock.

Starts slow but ends strong.

The book feels like the last third was super rushed. It had potential to al but then abruptly ends. Not particularly well planned out- shame because the previous items were quite good.

Long build up to a disappointing end.

I appreciate how difficult it is to work on a series of this size. That being said, this book seemed like it was created from a shower thought “they’ve fought chaos - what if it was the environment that was trying to kill them!?!” That’s most of the book.

Effectively the story revolves around the isolation of the platoon and how they cope, that leads to a very unsatisfying and rushed ending that they could have executed about 1/4 of the way into the book. The “reveal” at the end that’s sets us up for the next book wasn’t worth the wait and frankly felt tacked on to enable a next book.

There’s also a big deal about one of the characters walking bare foot though the jungle - but they were carrying a dead soldier who presumably had boots on.

The performance was very good and did all the heavy lifting of this mediocre at best story

The real enemy is the jungle
