About this listen

FRED & ROSE IS THE DEFINITIVE ACCOUNT OF THIS INFAMOUS TRUE CRIME CASE - NOW UPDATED WITH A POSTSCRIPT FROM THE AUTHOR. FROM THE MIND BEHIND 'FRED AND ROSE WEST: A BRITISH HORROR STORY' - NOW ON NETFLIX.

Fred and Rose West are virtually unique in British criminal history: a husband and wife who loved and killed together.

During their long relationship, the Wests murdered a series of young women, burying the remains of nine victims under their home at 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester, including those of their daughter. What was left of Fred West's eight-year-old stepdaughter was dug up from under the Wests' previous Gloucester home; his first wife and nanny were buried in open country. Most victims had been decapitated and dismembered, their remains showing signs of sexual torture. These twelve are just the ones police found when the Wests were arrested in 1994. There may be more whose bones have not been located . . .

Howard Sounes broke the first major story about the Wests as a journalist, and covered the murder trial of Rosemary West, before writing Fred & Rose, the definitive account of this infamous case. Beginning with Fred's and Rose's bizarre childhoods, Sounes charts their lives and crimes in forensic detail, creating a fascinating and truly frightening account of a marriage soaked in blood.©1995 Howard Sounes (P)2020 Hachette Audio

Good Story & Narration

I have just finished listening to this book and am deeply shocked and it takes a lot to shock me.

Some parts were unbearable and I had to take a break. This is not a book for the faint-hearted.

It is well narrated in a steady remorseless unemotional way which leaves the facts to speak for themselves.

I am convinced that Mrs West was involved because the volume of blood was so considerable that it was unlikely that West himself cleaned up and washed his clothes. Then there was the noise - she must have heard. The author is probably correct in concluding that both Wests were corrupted by their parents at an early age and regarded incest as normal BUT they knew it was deeply taboo as the children were threatened and collected from school.

On an emotional level I simply cannot understand. I will have to leave it at that and find something uplifting to listen.

unbelievable

Even though the subject matter could not possibly get much darker, this is an impressive book. It covers a lot of ground from the childhoods of Fred and Rose and their adult lives, the abuse of their poor children and then other unfortunate adults, all the way to their arrest and imprisonment/suicide. I felt I had a greater understanding of the possible motives of this murderous couple and it is gratifying to see how their daughter Heather, in her death, finally brought them down.

Fantastic

I knew about the West’s and what they had done, but only what I’d heard on tv & read in the newspapers. This book told me a lot more and it was even more shocking than how it was written in the press. Well worth reading if you enjoy true life and crime but be prepared to be shocked by some of the details.

Graphic story of the House of Horrors

I had very little knowledge about this case but it was fascinating to discover the facts behind this bizarre set of murders. The author has done very well compiling information from a variety of sources to tell this story in a detailed, chronological and unbiased order. It doesn’t feel like someone is reading out a list of bullet points as it flows very well tying together everything that was going on at the time in one comprehensible tale.

I was shocked and felt physically sick at some points especially around the sadistic sexual abuse to their 8yr old daughter. This isn’t for the faint hearted.

The narrator was excellent, putting on a range of strong accents throughout.

Devilishly curious and terrifying. Must read!

I’ve seen a lot of documentaries on this but never known the full details of what really happened any how they got away with it for so long, this is a great book and keeps you gripped till the end.
