About this listen

'Eloquent, accessible, and full of heart... Funny, thought provoking and deeply moving. An astonishing debut.' Taiye Selasi, author of Ghana Must Go

Gabby and Jonathan cross paths at the wedding of a mutual friend. They both wonder if this could be the start of something, but fate has other ideas.

When Niah tries to call out her employer for their empty words about diversity and inclusion, she comes face to face with racism reaching right to the very top.

Sharna is holding onto her own secret when she sets out for Jamaica to visit her grandfather, on a trip that throws fresh light onto the family history she has always taken for granted.

Shani Akilah's stunning collection brings to life the stories of Black-British Londoners as they explore friendship and romance, community and independence, and navigate their way through the relationships that make them who they are.

What a a beautiful and yes, delicious collection of stories that have been told with the passion I have not seen in a writer for years!
The courage and pure tenacity the author has displayed is creative, unique and mature.

The accents (particularly Jamaican) was unauthentic, rather like a Londoner trying to speak patois. That felt a little jarring and disconnected me from the narrative at times. But, on the whole, this was an interesting book and I enjoyed the stories.

The way the characters were interweaved in the final chapter. I wasn't expecting that!

But still a stunning boom in want gripped full in all the stories but loved the first 3 and how everything tied up neat read

Loved the short stories but I guess felt dated

I think my expectations were way too high, but I just couldn't get into this. I liked the idea behind it, but found the characters a bit vacuous and the stories very tropey.

Not for me
