About this listen

Alissa doesn’t believe in magic. Her father’s stories about the Hold, a legendary fortress where human Keepers learn magic from the enigmatic Masters, are just that—stories. But her mother insists Alissa has inherited her father’s magical ability, so she must go to the Hold to be trained.

On her way, she crosses paths with Strell, a wandering musician from the plains. Though Alissa is not sure she can trust a plainsman, Strell has something Alissa needs—one of her father’s old maps. Traveling together, they can reach the Hold before the snow sets in. But they don’t know that the Hold is nearly empty. The Keeper Bailic has sent the Masters on a fool’s errand and systematically killed the other Keepers in his search for the First Truth, a book of magic that will give him ultimate power. And he believes that Alissa and Strell hold the secret of the book’s hiding place.

This is the first book in the Truth Series by Dawn Cook, who also writes under the pen name Kim Harrison.

Critic reviews

"A beautifully told, simple story that looks unblinkingly at how prejudice unnecessarily reinforces misconceptions, misunderstandings, and hatred." ( Booklist)

Original concepts & great performance of characters from the reader. However initially felt the story dragged early on until almost half way through. From then onwards strings of the overall storylines are brought together well, making it into quite a thrilling, fun & enjoyable read.

Stick with it...

I can't remember why I got this book. For me the cover is incredibly off-putting, looking like it could be the cover of a Mills & Boon book. However the book is genuinely one of the best written fantasy books I've read,

A great, well written story.

This story moves slowly, with episodes of drama and excitement. It involves supernatural powers and creatures but, it is set in rural and Forrest environments that sound realistic and relatable.

There is a strong focus on relationships, between Alica ( Alissa?) and each of her parents, and her relationship with her unexpected companion Strell. The latter relationship is wonderful in it's unfolding nature I think.☺️

I definitely enjoyed this story, and I will be moving onto the next book in the series.
It is great to have different types of books, for different mods and activities. This book is not one I felt the need to listen to non stop, but instead, to enjoy in pieces, between listening to other titles. The fact that it is heavily descriptive and slowly unfolding makes it pleasant but, it also made it a book that I could easily take breaks from.
It is what I think of when hearing the word 'Tale', as it feels as though it is to be told patiently, to those who are willing to listen and appreciate upon the details.
A pleasing book. 🥰🙏🏽📖

A Beautifully Descriptive & Slowly Unfolding Tale.

Whilst I found Dawn Cook’s books about a quarter of the way through Kim Harrison’s writings, I never once connected the two as one and the same.

Listening back to this I can connect a few dots now Rachel Morgan is now a much fuller series.

Plus the narrator is fabulous, but after years of listening to Rachel Morgan audiobooks, I keep hearing Al and Rachel and not Strell and Alissa.

It’s a great start to a fantasy adventure series…

A great narration to one of my favourite series

superb read full of great characters that is achieved due to the talented narrator's skill.
I did struggle with the narrator's American accent for the first chapter but please stick with it.... it's 100% with it.

superb set of 4 books

I highly recommend all 4 books in this series, it's like a holiday for your head.

fantastic series

I'm sad to say I was incredibly bored and had to stop about 4 chapters in. The narrator, altho she had a lovely voice, was overly dramatic, and reasing so slowly only emphasised the boredom.

Not for me

R.I.P. I love this author, but the narrator killed it; truly dead for me. With her extension of words like chaiiiiiiir or words that she has no idea how to put emphasis on. I feel like I am back in college when everyone reads from their favourite book. Unlistenable.

A Narrator can be the death of a book

I'm sure this narrator has great appeal to some, but I couldn't get used to it and gave up within the first few chapters. The story just didn't get off the ground enough to hold my interest.

Irritating narration
