This book has been referenced a few times by other re-wilding books as the start of a movement, and its not wrong. It shows (at least to me) that the real disaster looming is not a climate disaster (although that is important) but an ecological one. Its just pushing me to do more rewilding where I can and donate money to good causes.

What a labour of love this book is. Every chapter was thought-provoking and well argued, and the glimmers of hope for a wilder future are so beautifully and passionately written. 10/10

In searching for recommendations on nature writing this book kept coming up in people’s top 5. I already follow the author on social media, so thought I’d give it a read.
I’m really pleased I did, it’s a brilliant book full of beautiful writing and a lot of honesty about the state of the islands we call home. At times depressing because of that honesty the thing the book inspired most was hope, which 10 years after it was written we need more than ever! Highly recommended.

Monbiot calmly but passionately lays out the case for a practical re-wilding. He shows how far policy lags behind our needs, skewed towards harmful farming and fishery practices.

It makes you see your surroundings in a new light, which only the very best books can do.

An important book

I have read this twice. The second time was on audible and having the author read the book gave it even more authority. Change the way you view the ‘countryside’ with our outdated and worn out agricultural system. This book brings real hope that we can let nature rewild our land and ourselves. A must for anyone with a love of wild places.

One of the most profound books I have read

If you are interested in the environment, then there is alot here that is astonishing. This includes how agricultural subsidies are leading to policies resulting in the systematic destruction of our environment. Support for financially unviable sheep farming is leading to ecological wastelands. George Monbiot gives a passionate and engaging delivery of his material. There are also sections where Monbiot describes some of his wildlife experiences, which don't really fit logically in the text. However, they are still engaging. I think that this book is mandatory listening for anyone who cares about the natural environment and how we can best rescue it!
