About this listen

A bold new voice in nature writing, from the front lines of Britain's rewilding movement.

Bringing Back the Beaver is farmer-turned-ecologist Derek Gow’s inspirational and often riotously funny firsthand account of how the movement to rewild the British landscape with beavers has become the single most dramatic and subversive nature conservation act of the modern era. Since the early 1990s - in the face of outright opposition from government, landowning elites, and even some conservation professionals - Gow has imported, quarantined, and assisted the reestablishment of beavers in waterways across England and Scotland.

In addition to detailing the ups and downs of rewilding beavers, Bringing Back the Beaver makes a passionate case as to why the return of one of nature’s great problem-solvers will be critical as part of a sustainable fix for flooding and future drought, whilst ensuring the creation of essential lifescapes that enable the broadest possible spectrum of Britain’s wildlife to thrive.

An unapologetic yet wonderfully honest look at the stagnant environment agencies of the UK and their bias towards reintroduction and conservation. How does a great job showcasing the amazing work done by ecologists to restore this magnificent animals place in the british isles.

a rewilding success story like no other

very funny commentary in some parts. It was good for my roadtrip to Devon and back as I was near a lot of the places mentioned and I'd always wondered what about North Devon earned it the "Biospehere" label. Personally I would have loved a few more facts about beavers and waterways but I learned plenty and enjoyed it as an intro.

great narration.

I've learnt a lot about beavers recently, through book, TV and the internet. I just learnt a lot more, and - despite not thinking it possible - now care more, too.

Educational and emotional, funny and sad, disheartening and yet hopeful by the end. I truly hope they are here to stay and thank everyone involved in their return home.

5 stars al the way. Powerful and poignant.

Enjoyed this so much that I bought the kindle version for my husband before I even finished the audiobook myself. And now he is enjoying it just as much :)

This books / audio book is the must listen / read for anyone who wants to make the countryside great again ! Derek explains how beavers have transformed history from Roman / Persian times to modern day and the unfortunate time of them being extinct in Britain for nearly 400 years and his story about bringing beavers back to the uk.
