About this listen

With news of Horus' treachery spreading across the galaxy, the Great Crusade grinds to a halt as the primarchs and their Legions decide where their loyalty lies - with the Emperor or with the rebel Warmaster.

The Dark Angels, too, face a time of testing, both among the stars and on their home world, Caliban. Luther, once Lion El'Jonson's trusted second-in-command, now languishes as an exile in all but name while his master struggles to thwart the traitors' advance upon the forge world Diamat. But an ancient evil gathers its strength beneath the surface of Caliban, and the First Legion will soon be thrust into a deadly conflict where all that they know will be cast into doubt.

Absolute Epic.

As far as the Hours Heresy Chronicles goes, there really is no shortage of epic stories, and this is one of them.
Written superbly, with no end of twists and turns that make it difficult to switch off from.
This is one of those audio books that the narrator only goes enhance the brilliance.
Fantastic story, wonderfully read.
Not to be missed.

Good book, some odd voice choices

A solid middle of the road Horus Heresy book. Slightly odd voice choices for some of the astartes. One of the lead characters Nemiel has a high little boy voice which gives it an Einid Blighton vibe. I get having tens of deep voices must be tricky but some did come across a little squeaky for 8ft hulking supersoldiers.

Good story, not so sure about the narrator.

I like this next step in the Dark Angels saga during the heresy, though the flip flopping between the two main characters did occasionally leave me forgetting which one was doing what.

my only real problem is the narrator. I just don't like Gareth Armstrong's take on accents and voices. Nemiel sounds like a confused child all the way through, despite being a giant astartes warrior and the ridiculous rolling R's that spill out when Luther speaks just add comedy to what should be serious moments. It's something I've noticed in previous books he's narrated and it always just snaps me out of the story.

Almost a 5!

I wanted to give this book a 5 because I love the Warmmer/W40k and especially the Horus Heresy series. However, every time the narrator spoke as Zahariel or Nemiel his voice sounded like Paddington, a TV series during my childhood! Those two particular characters are Astartes yet there voices were made to sound weak and insiped, what a shame, almost a 5!
