E.H. Gombrich egen historie er næsten mere kendt bogen i sig selv. E.H. Gombrich var kunsthistoriker skrev hele verdens historie på kun 6 uger. I 1935 lavede han ikke andet end at skrive på hans Lille verdenshistorie. Om morgenen og om eftermiddagen brugte han til at finde historisk materiale som han skrev i sin bog om aftenen. Helt frem til sin død i 2001 har redigerede Gombrich løbende i sin lille verdenshistorie.
