Ein toter Carabiniere ist Angelegenheit der Carabinieri. Commissario Marco Pellegrini von der Polizia di Stato darf nicht ermitteln. Und das, obwohl er den Mann kannte. Salvatore Bianchi, vierzig Jahre im Dienst in Brunate hoch über den Dächern Comos, wurde von der Standseilbahn überrollt, die Touristen und Einheimische in das beschauliche Dorf befördert. Und Pellegrini saß auch noch in genau dieser Bahn! Ein tragischer Unfall? Oder wurde Bianchi auf die Gleise gestoßen? Ausgerechnet die Ehefrau des Verstorbenen legt ein Geständnis ab. Aber hat wirklich sie ihrem Mann nach dem Leben getrachtet? Zwar ist Pellegrini von den Ermittlungen ausgeschlossen, aber dass er in der "Bar della funicolare" Augen und Ohren offen hält, kann ihm niemand verbieten. Zufällig liegt die Bar nur wenige Meter vom Fundort der Leiche entfernt, und bei einem "caffè" gerät so mancher ins Plaudern.
