About this listen

Defender by G X Todd is an imaginative thriller that draws on influences like Stephen King, Clive Barker and Neil Gaiman to create a new world - where the biggest threat mankind faces is from the voices inside your own head. If you loved The Stand, you'll love Defender, the first in a four-part series.

On the cusp of sleep, have we not all heard a voice call out our name?

In a world where long drinks are in short supply, a stranger listens to the voice in his head telling him to buy a lemonade from the girl sitting on a dusty road. The moment locks them together. Here and now it's dangerous to listen to your inner voice. Those who do keep it quiet. These voices have purpose. And when Pilgrim meets Lacey, there is a reason. He just doesn't know it yet.

Defender pulls you on a wild ride to a place where the voices in your head will save or slaughter you. #HearTheVoices

Critic reviews

"So accomplished that it's difficult to believe it's a first novel, Defender is already worthy to take its place alongside The Stand in the canon. An absolute gem of a book." (John Connolly)

this was a great read and a book that I couldn't put down. The book is full of interesting and fascinating ideas which you begin to believe could actually be really good actually be true, making you second guess yourself, and analyse yourself. For a while I was inside my head wondering if this was all true and all real, and I still haven't decided whether it is or not. The book is of course fiction and in that capacity was exciting and interesting and had me on the edge of my seat many times. However, it also suggest things that could actually be real which is always a good thing when you're reading a book, could this be real? Couldn't put this book down cannot wait to jump into book 2,

fascinating

Read this book years ago, and decided to re read it on audio so I can continue the rest. loved it all over again, great characters, horrible villains and intriguing lore . it's like the walking dead minus the zombies. can't wait to see where the story goes

excellent post apocalyptic Thriller

The book description sold it to me, unfortunately it failed to deliver.
I found the storyline very laborious often flitting back to give the same details from a different character perspective which overtime just stretched an average story out.
I’m hoping that this is just setting the scene for the continuance of the series (as I bought the second book at the same time as I bought this)
