About this listen

A gritty urban legal thriller you don’t want to miss! Perfect for fans of John Grisham, Robert Bailey, Michael Connelly and Robert Dugoni.

Has Charles picked the wrong side…?

London, 1969: The Kray twins, the nemeses of Charles Holborne, barrister, are finally convicted of multiple murders and sent away for the longest prison terms ever imposed by a British court. But with London in the grip of a housing crisis and unscrupulous landlords hiking rents, there are new ruthless enforcers terrorizing destitute East Enders. When a tenant dies during a violent altercation with bailiffs, Charles is instructed to represent the businessmen charged with conspiracy to murder.

There is motive, an eyewitness, and a confession–seemingly an open and shut case. But Charles suspects his clients are pawns in a much more dangerous game being played by shadowy Establishment figures. But are his instincts wrong this time? Is he being manipulated into defending a guilty man? And as dark secrets are revealed, will he have to choose between moral integrity and professional success?

DEATH, ADJOURNED is the ninth crime novel in an exciting historical series, the Charles Holborne Legal Thrillers—gritty, hard-boiled mysteries set in 1960s London.

Another Brilliant Listen

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the previous Charles Holborne stories and this is no exception. I love how the leading characters have developed together with a fascinating insight into the legal system post war and on through the 1960’s. I really hope there will be more in the series.

I love the authenticity of this and Simon’s other books

I am a great fan of legal thrillers particularly when they are connected to historical fact. I started with The Brief about a month ago and have binged the whole set.

The characters feel very familiar and I recognise several uncanny parallels with my own family history.

The books are absorbing and thoroughly entertaining. I absolutely recommend them and can’t wait to find out what happens next to Charles and Sally.

Excellent series overall

I love this series and have listened to all the books. Simon Michael captures the feeling of London in the 60s. He is the same age as I am so was young in the period he writes about but he has a a good feeling for what London was like at that time and for the cultural mores of the period too. I am familiar with all the areas he writes about and felt they were described with authenticity.

The narration is fabulous. Pronunciations of words are perfect throughout, the voices are disticlnct and consistent and the accents are excellent.

Altogether this is a thoroughly engaging series of legal thrillers. I hope that there are more in the offing Thank you Mr Michael

Superb storytelling

Another brilliant book in the life of Charles H. The accuracy of the legal proceedings are just sublime. The author and narrator are a superb team and elevate the story almost to real life. The only problem I have is once started I can’t put the book down.

Thoroughly Absorbing

The factual and subtle scene-setting, with just the right amount of historical insight, does exactly what a good novel should do - it draws you into the time and place where the characters live. And the characters - the combination of Simon Michael’s connection with the human psyche and Colin Mace’s expert narration has me feeling as though I know, or want to know, the people being described. ‘Big Kev’ and Maude are two such people in Death, Adjourned, brilliantly written and narrated. The Krays were great a great thread in previous books, but Charles Holborne stands up to rigorous scrutiny without them. I hope there’s much more to come in this series. Simon Michael is at the top of my favourite authors list. Thanks Simon and Colin - a great partnership.

As always with this series, beautifully written, appropriately researched and a read which you can’t help but think about between opportunities to listen.

Brilliantly written Web of Intrigue

Another fantastic read from Simon Michael. A courtroom thriller set in the late 1960's cleverly interwoven with stories based on real characters and events that give the whole book an aura of truth. The entire series is pure genius, fiction writing at it's best, and highly recommended. The narrator could not be faulted, across the series he has proved to be adept at many regional accents and only enhances the books with his performance.
