About this listen
In the distant past, a time of magic and swordplay, there lived Harold, the mightiest lich of all, a master of arcane sciences, and a challenger of gods. After reaching the pinnacle of his power and finding it surprisingly bland, Harold waged a cataclysmic war against the gods, aiming to shatter the very system that confined him.
He took a nap, but he is awake once more.
Upon discovering that the new gods have been using some of his phylacteries as batteries to sustain themselves and grow more powerful, Harold has decided to take back what is his. He won't be alone. Accompanied by his faithful butler and maid Alex and a limpet that just won't leave no matter how often he teleports her over the nearest lake, Harold journeys north and east.
The Flaming Steppes await. An untamed land where great mantises roam and where a few fiery sects have made their homes, cultivating and growing in one of the harshest environments in the Divine Kingdom.
They are not prepared for Harold and his companions.

The narration, as always, was fantastic! Justin Thomas James and Gary Furling were such a joy to listen to!
Moar Moar!

My favourite character, known as 🦪 'the limpet' was vital in making this story work. Her shy mannerisms whilst being the commander of the raids was just outlandishly humorous. It's fair to say that the well-written support characters in this book push the story along.
Our ☠️MC Harold made this work even funnier by taking a backseat throughout most of the book. It worked. The result for the listener is to delve through a world of necromancy and skull-patterned ties. My only critique is the novel had too many narrators. For me, fewer the better.

Overall a good improvement over book one. The focus seemed a bit scattered though, bouncing between characters. But still a fun listen.

The interspecies emotional miscommunication due to a total lack of the right words? A grave mistake in real life, but here? Comedy buried in brilliance. I was cackling like a lich at a pun convention.
And Alex? Please. Just let the poor one clean in peace. That’s the emotionally exhausted maid energy this entire unholy mess desperately needs. The commitment to staying out of the spotlight while quietly keeping everyone from fully decomposing (emotionally, socially, maybe physically?) deserves a haunted standing ovation.
Highlights include:
- Puns so dead they're alive again
- Existential crises with extra bone rattle
- Scenes that made me laugh myself six feet under
- Dialogue sharp enough to carve a tombstone
A skeletal romp through space and feelings. Absolutely decomposed my attention span in the best way.
Final words:
DO NOT read in public unless you're okay with grave laughter and people questioning if you're possessed.
Will I read it again? Probably. This series owns my bones.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need a snack. Preferably… cookies, which I somehow managed to forget about until just now. Tragic.
What in the necromantic name of calcium deficiency did I just read??
