Having listened to all of the Jane Tennison series, this one was eagerly anticipated. The Narrator was very good, especially when speaking as Jane, because her diction was just as you would imagine Lynda La Plante's character to speak!The story appealed to me because of the 1920''s family tree, and the ancestry research although the cold case was indeed shocking in more ways than one. However, a very large part of the audible concerns Jane's personal life and the refurbishment of her new house. So this very much lightened the noir side of the story.We meet Jane's family again and listen to her struggles to compete in what was a male dominated decade.Through the good narration we enter into Jane's world in which she is dedicated to her career.A lot of surprises along the way, and the audible kept the listener engaged throughout. Cannot wait till the next one!

I found the last quarter annoying as it just went on a bit too long

The last thing recently promoted DI Jane Tennison needs is another historic death after the gruelling case she investigated in the previous story but soon she finds herself on the site of a neglected house undergoing building work where the workmen have discovered a woman’s body in an unknown room in an old air raid shelter. As investigations proceed, the case soon reaches a fairly satisfactory conclusion but this is only the start of a complex journey back in time when the body of a murdered baby is also unearthed. Jane, tenacious as ever, is determined to get to the truth despite clashing with superior officers once again and finds herself immersed in a family full of dark unsavoury secrets and people who either can no longer remember or who are intent on keeping the facts hidden whatever the cost. On a personal level, Jane has found love with her own decorator Eddie and for once things are looking promising, but will her obsession with her job lead to her alienating all those around her?
As this series has unfolded, it is clear to see how Jane has progressed and grown, both as a person and as a highly intuitive officer but even in this story she is still finding it hard going sometimes as a female detective in what is still a very male dominated profession – in fact, I can’t recall Jane ever having a female DC on her team so far. She is slowly learning how to be a better leader, and this shows in the interaction with her junior officers. The plot itself is both interesting and sinister, with the police still relying on older methods of detection and a lot of shoe leather and interviews with some vividly portrayed characters. Lots to enjoy here in another absorbing instalment in the career of Jane Tennison.
The series has finally settled on a narrator who is perfect for the role of Tennison and delivers a quality and professional performance that was clear and easy to listen to and held my attention throughout.

Tennison still making huge mistakes, being selfish, obsessed, trying to save her own neck after more blunders. Surely a DCI would be better than this and put some time in running a team. Not surprising her fellow officers can’t stand her.

Still good but not one of LLP best. I got a bit bored during the middle regarding who the characters were and who and how they were related.
