About this listen

It was not long after Halloween when Stephen King received a telephone call from his editor. 'Why don't you do a book about the entire horror phenomenon as you see it? Books, movies, radio, TV, the whole thing.' The result is this unique combination of fantasy and autobiography, of classic horror writing honed to an unforgettable edge by the best-selling master of the genre.

Danse Macabre ranges across the whole spectrum of horror in popular culture, from the seminal classics of Dracula and Frankenstein. It is a charming and fascinating book, replete with pertinent anecdotes and observations, in which Stephen King describes his ideas on how horror works on many levels and how he brings it to bear on his own inimitable novels.

There is a reason why Stephen King is one of the best-selling writers in the world - ever.

I loved this book when first I read it, and have re-read it multiple times. I loved this performance as well, it does the book justice.

Fantastic book, great performance!

Great choice of narrator.
Although you can tell in was written over forty years ago, thus referencing book and film leading up to that time, and references that often will be ones that most readers won't be aware of, it's still a good book. I was born in '78 and so, even for me, there's quite of few cultural references that are before my time, and quite a few movies and TV shows (in particular) that I'm not familiar with, although I will be making a point of trying to source them. As for the books, I will definitely be sourcing the ones King references in a positive way.

Dated, but still hits the notes.

I love Stephen King and if he had narrated this himself I probably would have loved this book. but he didn’t. I just couldn’t get past the awful, hammy narration. Truly dreadful. It’s the first Stephen King book I’ve ever given up on. Don’t waste your money.

Stephen king should have narrated this

It's dated and uneven - some places would have required more work, a lot of it seems to be just thrown together from King's work as a newspaper columnist, but the book contains some goodies for Stephen King fans.

I found it really good as I now have a list of books to read that I didn’t realise I wanted to read. Without the insight into the plots/storylines I probably never would’ve bothered with some of them but now? I’ll be busy for a while!! Thank you!!

Great insight!
