About this listen

Roman Britain, AD 52. The western tribes, inspired by the Druids' hatred of the Romans, prepare to make a stand. But can they match the discipline and courage of the legionaries?

Wounded during a skirmish, Centurion Macro remains behind in charge of the fort as Centurion Cato leads an invasion deep into the hills. Cato's mission: to cement Rome's triumph over the natives by crushing the Druid stronghold. But with winter drawing in, the terrain is barely passable through icy rain and snowstorms.

When Macro's patrols report that the natives in the vicinity of the garrison are thinning out, a terrible suspicion takes shape in the battle-scarred soldier's mind. Has the acting Governor, Legate Quintatus, underestimated the enemy, his military judgement undermined by ambition? If there is a sophisticated and deadly plan afoot, it's Cato and his men who will pay the price.

What did you like most about Britannia?

The action sequences well described and the narrator increased the pace to make the action seem dynamic

What did you like best about this story?

The relationship between the two heroes and the camaraderie and language used between military men was in my opinion authentic e.g. the swearing and cursing was correct and appropriate, the way the two heroes bounce off each other is brilliant.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Keeble’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This performance was equal to the last one Jonathan Keeble does the business once again this narrator is in my opinion superb

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Macro saving Cato with a bash over the head during the retreat

The druids were defeated, but mona was not taken, there was no harassment on the way back ,the subjugation of mona was called off , as this was the army that had to go and fight and defeat Boudica at Watling Street

As usual, with Cornwell a great story that moves along quickly. If you know the characters you'll like this bok.

Really enjoyable listen.

There's no doubt about it in my mind. Simon Scarrow should be awarded a Triumph and be paraded through the streets of Rome to the cheers of thronging crowds made up of his adoring listeners. To keep a series going this long to this standard is a rare thing and to raise the bar as he has with this Britannic trilogy within the series the way he has is something I find admirable. For anyone that doesn't agree there is a role for them in a traditional Triumph :-)

This is a book full of inventive action with imaginative skirmishes and major battles of massively different types. The wonderful British tribes continue to torture the Roman invaders in all manner of fiendish ways but possibly the toughest enemy is the British weather. It's a huge slog for our favourite pair of Roman legionaries and they are tested in ways that stretch even their now legendary reserves of courage, strength and fortitude.

The narration, well of course it's Mr Keeble, one of Audible's true A-listers and so you can be sure it's of absolutely the highest standards.

It seems that finally Macro and Cato are set to shake off the rains, snow and ice of Britain in the next book. They are heading off for warmer but you'd guess not safer climes. However this trilogy of books set in my homeland will live in the memory a long, long time.

I am so impressed by Jonathan Keeble's narrating. It feels I am coming back to the fold everytime he is giving life to Cato and Macro. This book, the third in a mini Britannia series, is no less as previous.
The battle scenes is perfect and the deeper anguish, pride and honour of the two heroes is deeper.
Thank you
