About this listen

David Niven is remembered as one of Britain's best-loved actors. The archetypal English gentleman, he starred in over ninety films. He is also one of Hollywood's finest chroniclers. In this second volume, David Niven turns his attention to 'The Great Days of Hollywood' between 1935 and 1960. These were times of legendary film stars and despotic producers, of tycoons, of oddballs, and of classic movies. Rich in anecdote, and written in his inimitable humorous style, Bring on the Empty Horses is perhaps the most acclaimed sequel to an autobiography ever written.

Highly recommended

Beautifully written and narrated. Enjoyed every word. I feel I've read everything out there that's a worthy read and struggling to find something new. So glad I came across this (and The Moon's a Balloon). Highly recommend both.

Wonderful insight into Hollywood.

I loved his delivery, and the overall tone was wonderful. It was also very insightful and generally enjoyable.

Wonderful

You need to read the other book first, as this is the second part. The first is his childhood. This book is an intimate portrait of all those stars, Gable,Bogart etc, and what they were like away from the cameras.

Classic Niven

Self deprecating - full of highs and lows and laughs. He was a gent of his time. Story about Duke of Marlborough - fantastic.

Fabulous, witty and even a bit sad in places

Would you consider the audio edition of Bring on the Empty Horses to be better than the print version?

I read both David Niven's books years ago and so enjoyed them I had no hesitation in buying the audio version, especailly as I could listen to his wonderful voice reading them. I was not disappointed. A real insight into a truly fascinating life described by the man himself. If you like David Niven you will enjoy his audio books. I was really sorry when it ended.

What other book might you compare Bring on the Empty Horses to, and why?

The Moon' A Balloon, his other autobiography which is just as good.

What about David Niven’s performance did you like?

He has a wonderful voice and to hear him reading his own words was magical.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could have done if I had had the time but I listened on the train while commuting to work.
